Does anyone know the best way to set up/wire a KP3 when im running Reason from my powerbook through it? Im basically using it for live effecting/sampling a little, and the way i have it works fine at home but when i take it to a venue and try to use it for a gig i get this really loud hum.
my set up is this:
maudio midi keyboard (usb)> powerbook > 1/8 to RCA to KP3 > RCA to 1/4 to sound board

the only difference is that at home its going directly into a 1/4 mono input and at venues it goes into a direct box.

im baffled.

Sorry for so many questions, I just think it's always better to get an opinion from someone who actually has a unit and has used it. I was thinking about getting a second hand esx1 but this looks much more fun :)

Oh hell, I love Electribes, I encourage to go with the EMX1, you get allot more for your money, you get the MMT Synth engine with infinite synth voices that are tweakable past eternity.. If it's sampler functionality you want then pump the Drums (channel 10) and 5 synth voices over midi to your DAW sampler. Shit!!! Then you have the best of both worlds in a much bigger way.

I would get a EMX before I would a KP3 and you know I love the KP3. Once you start jamming on that EMX arpeggiator while it's all synched with you host and you have a mix of acoustic and electronica sounds all balanced out together...it's heaven. You mess around and create whole new Genres.

Check out this demo tune that is in the old Electribe EA1. I used it's 2 synth parts, Live, Jamstix, Trilogy, Pro53 and FM7.

MM that EMX1 looks tempting. Some of the videos on you tube are very impressive.

How tweakable would you say the sound set is ? I liked the idea of being able to sample my own sounds in the ESX but...I could live without and just use the PC for that.

Does that ribbon controller send midi ? Better go hunt me a manual.

That and a mini KP or even the full one, can't make my mind up still yet, would be agood break away from the PC world. I guess I could run my guitar through the EMX as well.

Off manual hunting...

The soundset is very tweakable, they give you allot of MMT synth voices to build from. Yes!! The ribbon controller sends midi and it is fantastic!

Yeah I've watched some of the "solo-ing" videos on youtube and was mighty impressed.
It seems so musical, much more so than when I confine a scale in Live and bash at the keys! Still could well be a user thing! ;)

To emulate the EMX in Live be sure to assign a controller to note length so that you can slide back and forth between staccato and legato. Add the Pitch midi effect too, set it to move in whole octaves or in harmony with the key you are in.

Ah of course, awesome tip on the note length, just didn't think of that :D

plan on using this functionality of the kp3 tell the rest of us (me :hihi: ) how you're going to use it, what it offers you...... sorry i've got brainblock.
well, i was looking to purchase Faderfox's LX2 (the one with all the buttons) but if the KP3 has the ability to send note on/offs from the individual cells on the pad, i'm going to go for the KP3 because it offers so much more besides....

as far as using this feature, for me, it would be for live situations more than studio work. since buying the Monome 40h, i've really enjoyed using note on/off messages to control mutes, bypass, solo and launching samples, playing individual slices of a sample, etc, etc. The KP3 will be a very nice companion to the 40h indeed 8)

From what I've read and has been said here I don't think every individual cell can send note on/off but you can choose eight different types of pattern which have zones which then send midi data as a controller.

I think whyterabbyt says it best here:

The pad can have one of 8 'patterns' assigned to it, determining the way it responds (ie 8 vertical strips, 8 horizontal, X->Y, spiral etc). There's also a Pad Touch and Pad Assign for each 'zone' in that pattern. The 'Pad Touch' can have a MIDI note assigned to it, with start and release velocity, and it can be a toggle or momentary switch. It can alternately send
MIDI Start, Continue or Stop messages.

(Also, the 8 top buttons, hold button, and the 4 sample buttons can send CCs, Note values and MIDI Start, Continue or Stop messages)

The FXDepth control and the slider only send CCs.

Any other controls are unassignable.

Could be a ground loop issue. Try a different DI Box, one with a ground lift switch.

Thanks a lot you guys (thick with sarcasm). All this talk and youtube linking has forced me to spend hard earned cash on yet another device that will bring me one step closer to completely ignoring my fiance. When I miss my own wedding due to my complete obsession with computer music, I am blaming this forum and all of you people. Thanks again.
