It seems that all the rumours surrounding Gmedia's OB-8 emulation have died out a bit. Does anyone have any news on it? Are they still working on it? It'd be so cool to have an OB emulation by Gmedia :)

Post

The closest you'll get at the moment is the pic of an OB-8 in their Vintage Synth Trumps card deck !

Their website says that work on future products (in this case VSM) has been slightly delayed due to their conversion of extant stuff to Universal Binary format.

it was cancelled, legal stuff.

I find it very hard to believe that they wouldn't have sorted that out before even embarking on the project.

Lot's of reasons they might work on something without having the legal rights, proof of concept, test environment, component modeling. And really all anyone has seen is a GUI flashed on a screen at a trade show. Could have been a flat rendering for all we know.

What puzzles me is there is an actual OB knock-off on the market and no one says boo about that.

I was waiting for the S.O.B. (no pun intended...) till last week but finally jumped into the OP-X wagon.

The only Oberheim I've ever had is my ancient black-face Matrix 1000 (which is considered the coldest OB ever - not the coolest). That said I can't vouch for the "reality" factor - how well OP-X emulates an OB-X or something. But it sounds pretty good and some of the patches reproducing well known sounds (like Rush's Tom Sawyer intro) are very close to what I hear in the original records. It is an alternative to be considered IMO.

Ok, word is that Gibson,(who owns the OB name), will sue
anyone who makes an OB emu. Its said this is why G-Media
stopped SOB. If that's the case, how did Sonicprojects
get away with it? Have they just not been caught yet? :P

...they will be - once Gibson figures out that they actually sell their stuff very well and that this Reaktor/SE emulation is good enough to be taken serious...

(...if this isn't some advertisment for Sonicprojects like "get it while you can", then I don't know :D...)

is that right?

Fact, or yet more Kriminal disinformation..?

This makes me wonder why they wouldn't just repackage it as something original as opposed to an emulation instead of just 'throwing away' whatever work has been done.

Don't believe anything unless someone from GMedia comes here and says it.

Gibson are notorious for sueing over anything to do with brands that they own;they've done it many times with products that are dormant or not made for years.

Their buying and subsequent destruction of Opcode and their Studio Vision sequencer was astounding in it's stupidity.Gibson wont licence anyone to do an Obie . Maybe when nobody gives a shit about them anymore in 20 years or so. 8)
