Genesis-related Squids stuff and Simon Collins

Gabriel is still soooo cool - he ever was and ever will be be - he really does his own thing - and if you look at 35years old Genesis live-footage it's just stunning how cool&attractive without being trendy this guy still appears

Could you guys recomend some Peter Gabriel that is not Genesis-ish? I would like to get what it is that some amny dig about him. So far what I have heard doesn't do it for me.

as with many artists the singles are usually the weakest tracks on his albums...

Jens, I think choreography that appeals to 17 year old hip hop kids can be quite unappealing, at least to me.

I prefer either more genuine "just be yourself" type stuff or some really intense or out there stuff when it comes to performance...


of course Gabriel was that way... intense and out there. He wasn't ALWAYS "cool" though. Sometimes he looked a right fruit cake! Haha. I mean, it IS hard to look cool with a big flower around your head or wearing a dress or a silver suit with a reverse mohawk (ok that's sort of cool).

but the cool thing was that he was doing this odd suff without appearingh to care whether or not he appeared like a fool - he just did his own thing...

this reminds me of a little story:

a few years back the brother brother-in-law of the guitar-player of an ex-band of mine was invited to a party. Now he's the manager of a bigger company and also dresses and appears as you'd expect it from this postition.
Somehow he thought the party was going to be a constume-ball and so he showed up as some kind of monster - he didn't have just a bit of paint on his face or something but did the full job on himself but when he arrived at the location he realized that it was just a normal party - really terrible situation for most people, if you think about it. So what did he do? I know what I would have done and he wasn't even too far from home to go back, remove the constume and return to the party in his usual appearence. But that's not what he did: he just went in and had fun and also introduced himself with his real name when he spoke to others. Apparently he didn't care at all what they thought when they saw him. And that is real coolness.

Anyway, like I said, I don't think that's where we're at working on this project. I think it's very cool and genuine... and intnese and a little out there as well. Not as out there as I can imagine but definitely different than the stuff you hear on the radio. I'll play you guys a little snip of a few things so you can hear. Various versions of it go from it being a mix of progressive to electronic to straight rock... but it will probably lean more toward electronic in the end because he's really into that the most. I am more into rock personally but it is a nice balance.

I'm really looking forward to it.

That's a great story. Hilarious. I commend anyone who shows up to a regular party as a sort of monster! Classic. I'd do it. f**k em. Even on purpose. You can probably even get a great date out of it if you work it right. Bold. Of course, it depends on the monster. A drooling monster is tough but a Godzilla-esque costume I think could impress... wow that's funny. But, coming by accident and having really gone over the top... that needs to be in a movie.

That's exactly what crossed my mind when I first heard it.

(and it does indeed remind me of Gabriel, especially minding those Slipperman-vids which are floating around on Youtube where you can hear the audience giggle away)

Done with the mix of the Genesis tune. Came out great. I can't play it yet though since there are negotiations with some major labels (can't pull my usual Squids stuff this time). I think some of you will like the keyboard sounds which were done with Sonik Synth. I don't know about you but the way I use Sonik Synth is like raw material to shape to your song. I am almost always custom programming it to the song. I've come up with some of my favorite patches that way actually.

No. I wish I was though. It would be fun and also I really want to go to Switzerland. I asked Simon if he was going to go but he's busy working on his thing, mixing the track with Hackett on it over in Canada where he lives. We're experimenting now with sessions over the internet for his album. The Genesis single we did is done and mixed. Sounds good! I can't wait to play it for everyone. But I have to! I may go on tour with Simon when he's done and there's a remote possibility we'll play some version of Supper's Ready. (I am totally serious). He's into it. I just listened to it today and that song is awesome. It really is.

Well.. i would say the song 'The Rhythm and the Heat' off the Security CD cuts to the nut of Gabriel.. the pan ultimate ..

of course you will see where the Genesis cut Mama came from ..

Phil's work stands in somewhat the same relation to early Genesis that Stevie Wonder's does in relation to his own earlier work, both raising an eternal question: is a musician's brilliant early work invalidated by subsequent musical crimes against humanity? Phil is still my favorite drummer but not for anything since the early '80's. I was a big Gabriel fan as a kid, when he went solo - any of his first 4 or 5 records are excellent.

However Dave, the main course of these days - apart from tour news - is SACDs sound which generated an almost controversy thing. Both Steve Hoffman's audiophiles forum and the special sections of Genesis forum (Genesis Music and Ask Nick) have been lately a sort of battlefield where - between many enthusiastic comments (including mine) there were many disappointed and very critical positions against the works mainly regarding the alleged heavy compression on the mastering and a bit also on the details sonically speaking (I think the details on Nick's remix are dense and sublime) which would allegedly be too bright (!)
I admit I am quite a bit shocked on the negative use of certain words which to me always had a positive meaning: bright, crisp, clear...oh my dear. Many "audiophile" people used all of those to designate serious sound defects.
I for one also would use exactly those same words but to praise the sound of SACD remixes which in their surround mode sound really magnificient.

On the tour side, hope to soon talk to you on Tony's sounds, setlist and concert performances although in the last few weeks there already were some info on both October rehearsals setlist (as of now very promising however the guys, during recent US radio interviews, hinted a possible inclusion of other thing such as some Duke instrumental stuff and other possible surprises) and the forthoming mini-set for VH1 Rock Honor.

I haven't heard the final mastered SACD's yet. Also, what I heard at The Farm were pre-mastered I believe... right off the computer in THEIR system so it's going to sound just like the way Nick wanted them to... and to me it sounded freakin' INCREDIBLE! As I have raved. I AM curious to hear the SACDs though to see if I enjoy them as much but... I bet I will. I liked the way the promo disc sounded on my 5.1 system so... plus, I really think Wind & Wuthering and ATTWT can benefit heavily from the remixing and separation. If it is sounding better than ever before then I don't see how anyone could complain... well, I can see how anyone can complain really because it's all subjective... plus people like to voice their opinions on the subtle nuances of audiophiledome and it is even fun to take opposing sides (for some). So who knows? But is it still worth getting for any Genesis fan? I'd have to think so!!!!!!!!!!

Simon hasn't heard a lot of 5.1 music before and in the studio I put on some Genesis 5.1 stuff I have and he just sat there with a big grin on his face. I was messing with the mix because I have a player that has individual outputs and listening to his dad's vocals solo was a trip and also listening to just certain channels revealed parts we had never heard before (which we also ended up doing additional vocal harmony overdubs in our mysterious cover... I say mysterious but do people already know? He may have mentioned it in an interview).

Anyway, I may pop over to the SH forum. The Genesis forum is all changed and you have to jump through hoops to get in or pay or whatever and I was only originally there casually for fun and convenient. I am on the KVR forum everyday because, well, this is our business talking about sounds and software... with a little "inside the music" kind of stuff such as this. Hmmm. Speaking of "Inside the music" I am participating on a panel this Saturday in Ft. Lauderdale on a seminar called "Inside the Music Business". It is co-hosted by a long-time friend of mine I went to High School with named Adam Gaynor who used to play guitar in the band Matchbox 20. If anyone is around you might enjoy it. I am actually on the producer/engineer/recording panel (they don't have one specifically about sampling) but there's some on music law, on publishing, on touring etc. It's an all day event. Sorry, but I need to add a little rain to this parade. I dread hearing any new Genesis material without Hackett and PG's participation or any kind of Live set - I don't think I can take another round of disappointment from a band that at one time was so dear to me. I never had a problem with Genesis becoming more Pop or commercial - times and tastes were changing, and it was inevitable. But instead of taking their adventurous sensibilities into a more commercial idiom - like say the Police, XTC, Japan, Split Enz, PG, Kate Bush and others, they chose instead to make some of the cheeziest, reprehensible dreck imaginable. Perfect music for your next debutante ball. Sometimes musicians just lose the magic - look at McCartney. Genesis lost it after Wind & Wuthering. Oddly enough, I do like Abacab, but I think that has more to do with Hugh Padgham's neat production.

I just can't bring myself to look forward to something that is probably just gonna lessen what little respect I still have left for the boys. Sad really.
