Can anybody direct me to a VST effect or give me a hint on how to obtain that vocal effect present in black metal music (like cradle of filth,etc). It seems pretty reasonable that they use something on the voice to make it sound like that.

Well, that.s not a very technical response, but i.m not really convinced they are not using a real-time filter even in concerts and so... do you have proof otherwise ?

I've recorded a lot of black metal bands back in the days and they did'nt use any effects. I'm not too familiar with Cradle of Filth but i do listen a lot to Dimmu Borgir which is kind of similar,right ? And i can assure you they do sing like that. There's no effects on it.

Wow. Thanx. I had no idea. I wanted to create something slighlty different but to use that kind of voice a few times in a song. Guess i.ll have to work my throat for that

heh, last metal band i was in i was the vocalizer. it took about 2 weeks worth of regular practice (twice a week w the band) to get my throat to where i could get through an entire set and not feel like i was going to cough up my larynx. it took even longer to sound consistently *good*.

It really shouldn't hurt your throat terribly. If it does, than you're not pushing with your stomach, IMO...I was in a few metal bands in my day, and screamed all kinds of screams...if it really hurts your throat, stay away from it, you're doing damage to your vocal chords. Bring your voice down as low as you can, keep your throat loose, and push from your gut, not your chest.

By the way, this is much easier said than done. You have to teach your throat not to tighten up on you, it's a reflex. Your throat will tighten in anticipation of all the force you're about to put through it...happens just as you go to belt one out.

But do keep in mind that the "low" sounds produced are a death metal technique. Black metal tends to keep the vocals to more of the shreiking side.

True BM has never has vocal effects. All of the vocals come from the actual performance. And if your throat hurts when you do it, yo're doing it wrong. You're supposed to use your diaphragm and not your throat.
