streifentier - The Giant Mushroom Tree -> #2 - Intro to a video game soundtrack? I'd be expecting Johnny to break out the nunchucks or sword toward the end of the track and get going on the quest. Nice suspenseful atmosphere, I like the sounds and pensive energy.

Scoops - Rejuxtaposition - The Pass By
-> #2 - Yeah, it's got that prog vibe to it. Nice sounds. Very dark and moody. Favourite part is probably the guitar line going from 0:54 or so to 1:16.

Finally updated the Contest Radio Page.

slartibartfast - Musical Instrument Digital Interface -> #4 - I got a real kick out of your lyrics; very well-written. Nice vocal/vocoding performance, great sounds, and a great solo towards the end too. A delightful musical romp. Excellent work.

A moment of tranquillity...

slartibartfast - M.I.D.I. : Mello & Knockman, here's one you gonna like ! 20 years ago this could have been a hit... ...Pfffffft... It's gettin harder and harder to say "excellent", in another way !

Among the tracks based on file #2 (Max el belga, MaliceX, NapalmBob, Streifentier, and me) this is the one I prefer.
Thanks man.
But ya gotta thank Mal-x
He's the guy that put up the orig.

I just bastardized it, and spawned it off into it's own little bit of evil :hihi:

I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent

I suppose it's just one ways of taking advantage of the competition. Thanks for using the file, it's a bloody honor. :D

Echo Voodoo and Max el Belga, thanks for your very kind comments.

Echo, I have to admit that half of the solo (probably the good half) in my track was actually contained in the original File 4.

The quantity and quality of reviews has taken a major leap forward in recent months. All you reviewers should give yourselves a well-deserved pat on the back (if this is physically possible).

I hope to be able to contribute some reviews myself over the next few days - time permitting. Just in case I run out of time, if anyone specifically would like to have their track reviewed, send me a PM - I will put your track to the top of the review list, and spend a little more time going into detail.

Thanks again.....
Time is an illusion - lunchtime doubly so.

Just a small tip to help you vote this month : start selecting the versions you don't like; this way you may be able to eliminate already a song (try harder and find another one... ).

Markleford - Surprise : "What a kakafonia :-o !", said the missus, "That must be Jazz..." Well, she doesn't like Jazz at all. And this little frivolity sounds like Sun Ra at his best. Markleford you're a polyfacetical man with lots of talents ! Musically not always my cup of tea, but that's the faith of the vanguardist. You're also 1 of the guys that made me buy a Yamaha EZ-AG and recently the DD-55. Let me put it in a metaMaxphorical way : IMO you're the Leonardo da Vinci of the contest. 8)
BTW : the song is very well done, a bit "squary", but me like it a lottaaa... !

Cheers,

Max... .. . :P

Max, you're getting better and better with your comments: 'MetaMaxphorical' made my day...can't stop laughing...outch, my stomach!
I love the Markleford-cacaophonix!

I'm due for some more comments, so here goes...

--------------------
oddbods finger - I Got No Time
HeeHaw and all that. Pretty cool track. The lyrics are great (and fit the track so perfectly). All the instruments sound fantastic (love that little penny-whistle thing). Sounds like you put a lot of time in the arrangement for this one. I really like the tempo change @ 1:20. Top notch track.

--------------------
kundara - DrumNJazz
The drums + percs in this track are quite incredible (especially from 1:28 on, where that crazy warped-vocal sound plays off the kick and snare). The only thing I didn't so much like was the super-wide lead synth. It's a little piercing (on my setup anyway). Other than that, I really dig this piece.

--------------------
me109 - Rhapsody in Beer
Wasn't sure what to think, until the faux-glissandi piano chords kicked in. Then this track really kicked it up by a dozen notches. A VERY amazing arrangement (except the little trumpet solo from 1:07 - 1:25... not that it was played wrong, more that the ADSR-stuff seemed a bit artificial to me). That grand finale is pretty mind-blowing though. WOW!

--------------------
nikp2000 - into_night2
Very atmospheric take on the original (I love the diversity of all the versions of this one). I really like the fret-tapping harmonics @ 0:24. They work so well with this piece. Love the reversed-strat sound as well. Minimal, but really enjoyable track.

--------------------
rachmiel Sci-Fi Polka
DOOOO DOOOOO DOO.. erm... I digress. I've not heard anything this strange since GWB's public appeal to spacial entrepreneurs. Really wacky stuff (but almost tame by your standards)! This brings me back to my square-bits-o-paper-on-the-tongue days. Nutty. :-)

--------------------
Nils_B - A different state of mind
Speaking of square-bits... add a spliff to the mix, and you've got the essence of this little masterpiece. This is very, very good. The vocal swells @ 1:45 are so great that I wish they were fit into somewhere else in this track. The overall production and artistic expression are above-and-beyond. Super work. EDIT: I just noticed the bird-chirps that subtly fade in @ 1:20... your stock just jumped up a few points!

--------------------
stressed - on the road
Another fantastic mind-trip drifter. The highlight for me was definitely the atmospheric guitar solo starting @ 1:13... awesome tone there. I was kinda hoping to hear a bit of a break from the watery, chorussed vocals. Guess I'm used to hearing a bit of unprocessed vox in tracks that incorporate that effect. Nice work otherwise.

I wasn't expecting quite so much quality when I decided to participate... won't hear me complain though.

Irony: One of the reasons you select one MIDI file over the others is that it had been little used so far in the contest, only to discover shortly after putting in your submission that the last four people submitting have used it too.

Thanks Max+mello. :)

Sometimes I wish for a consistent recognizable sound, but it's good to be able to change styles, too!

This tune ended up being a lot of fun for me, just when I was on the verge of burning out on music and quitting for a while. Maybe I'll be able to stick to it a while longer! :P

Just popping in to say:

HOLY SHIT!*

The last few submissions have been absofuckinglutely awesome in their quality and professionalism and their awesomely awesome awesomeness.

Thanks to Scoops, Slartibartfast and 1-2-Many for their truely inspirational work. Heck, even Markleford's and Steveholt's are mind blowingly good.

I'm kind of regretting my entry now

Oh well, we all have next month...
...to kick arse.
