This was happening when electronic organs started incorporating rhythm boxes with accompaniment sections. Now, there are only a handful of players who can actually play an arpeggio...shame and a sin. Pretty soon, the XBox will replace guitar players! LoLmaxhodges1 wrote:Computers are learning to understand music and join the band

On American Idol, a supposed singing contest, contestants can make it to the final 10, without any talent- just long hair and a perceived cuteness by 8-year olds. BTW, the same high school drop-out claims that he wants to go to Berklee (College of Music). Good Luck! It's a tough school.
In the future, those who actually can play/sing, might very well be looked at as an oddity. However, coming from a society that appears to be degenerating, this stands to reason. After all, automations and animations appear to be the trend.

I don't see the problem with that, though (without completely incinerating this thread). Music is about the creative process; I use strings patches rather than playing violin, I use processed samples rather than playing physical drums, etc. As long as I'm still creating good music, why does how I GET that good music matter?
It's about using the tools at your disposal. If you've got the tools to take any performance that's about 10% decent sound fantastic, why wouldn't you use them?

Music is the creative process of transferring ones feelings and emotions into a sound that others can feel. How can a computer generated song give you that same effect?
The sound and how its expressed is the way i think we make music, and if you use a computer to manage your bassline. Then your screwing yourself over because your losing control over your sound and giving it something that doesnt give a f###, what effect it has on you or your intended audience. Do not get me wrong I think computer generated music is neat. However its not going to revolutionize what we know as "music" in its most classiscal essence.
Thats just my opinion, and im not trying to bash this thread.

We're machines too, albeit much more sophisticated ones. Composing music is one of the class of tasks that I believe computers can do satisfactorily. YMMV. :-}
BTW, google Musikalisches Würfelspiel to see Mozart (or maybe not; authorities disagree) playing with a very simple form of algorithmic composition.

Now if we could only get em to put down their guns and violent ways and come play some supermellow chord structures then we'd be getting somewhere..
