Anyone got a freeware firewall running on Vista? I tried the PC Tools one, but it crashes.

Take a good look at the new firewall in Vista, it's vastly improved, now it supports blocking ports from your computer and not just to it amongst other things (eg. to stop spyware etc from calling home and such). By default it's just set to "Allow everything out" and "Deny incoming" more or less though.

I did have a quick look at configuring it so I can choose what "phones home", but I wasn't sure how reliable it was. I'd also like something that asks me what to do if anything tries to.

try comodo pro firewall free if it doesn't work r away right click and run in xp mode try this for any drivers, soft, apps u might b using .

Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHz (955X chipset)
2 GB of RAM
ATI 955X video
Echo Layla3G with 7.2 drivers
Vista Business Edition (that's what we a get a free license to at my brother's uni that he works in)
Steinberg Cubase SL 3.11

I can't play music through Media Player or other players without get pops and crackles. Sometimes they are constant and sometimes they happen every few seconds. It is highly annoying.

Steinberg Cubase SL 3.11 with newest Syncrosoft Vista drivers does not work well. I get constant CPU spiking and thus get random dropouts every few seconds.

Not a good combination.

I have also tried the Vista beta drivers for my GuitarPort and get the same results for pops and clicks so it doesn't seem to be audio card related.

Hope this helps

Hardware wise:
Athlon 64 3700+ (socket 754 version)
2gb ddr 3200 ram
using onboard sound due to no decent driver support for my audigy
radeon x1950 pro vid card (agp)
everything works apart from the aforementioned soundcard.

Software wise:
Well I use Modplug Tracker, and that works.
All the VSTi's I use seem to work okay, with the exception of Guitar Rig 2, which occasionally crashes Modplug tracker under Vista.

Maudio have started on Vista drivers. Fast track USB are available. Hopefully they will do 24/96 soon...

Regarding the EMu 1820M I have found that iits default setting is 50MS for ASIO performance. However if you load cubase of similar in vista in Admin mode you can change the ASIO setting, and this will stick even after reboots. I have tried using it at a variety of settings and seems most glitch free at 20ms which isn't perfect for live play but you can get away with it for most things. Certainly much better than the default setting.
Hopefully they will bring out a proper driver soon tho that will allow professional performance (5ms) as playing Ivory is still less than perfect.

HW
2Gb ddr 6400 RAM
AMD Athlon 5200+ Dual Core

SW
Vista 64 Homepro

Reaper runs great , no probs 0% CPU for prgrm 8% Core2 for 15 inst betabugs plugs(various)
T2 runs, cpu burn overall is equal %wise to xp but there is no Dualcore support for T2 so all on 1 core
Live 6 runs well, but heavy cpu crunch on both cores ????

M-audio has no vista drvers for Delta66 which is the only card in their lineup with x64 support
Line6 toneport and soft will not install on a 64 bit system . Period. Tech support says they have plans, I have jobs lined up. :uhuhuh:
Best of my knowledge MOTU is still top of the line with support and features . Pricey, but damn professional . Always two steps ahead of the spider .

All in all , Vista is a stable and nice(tho cpu Intesv) OS . Most everything I use runs and pretty damn well . Updates are coming through rather frequently too . I'm glad I got it over xp64. If you are having problems with any programs, first try properties , compatibility, run in compatibility for xp SP2 . If that doesn't fix it ? Tech support.

PS. ReadyBoost lets you use up to a 4Gb USB flash drive as RAM . Has to be readyboost capable tho. To much Mem drain from samples ? Put the flash drive in . :tu:

Well...ME was a complete piece of crap. Vista is not quite there yet...but it is certainly blowing in sales, is piss poor for drivers and has virtually NO support in the business community (AKA where the BIG bucks are really spent).

The biggest issue I have with Vista is exactly what the gist of this article was - just what is my motivating "WOW" factor to upgrade? Vista offers absolutely nothing that I cannot do in XP. I am certainly to going to spend dime one on a new license and especially ANY new hardware if I cannot easily see a good reason to move forward.

Pound for pound - XP is hands down faster, more mature and just plain works on anything you install it to. And for audio purposes - forget it. Vista is months away from being ready for any DAW work...

Actually the very very large and very very hated company I work for is rolling out vista, longhorn and office 2k7 with every new machine and any capable machine in existance. Any microsoft shop that has a premier support contract should be following suit. From what I gather, the OS licenses for XP or Vista are the same price in this kind of contract.
