What a wonderful vocal performance of some great lyrics, with an emotively arranged backing. One minor suggestion would have been to drop out the repeated high-pitched note part way through - it does become rather wearing after a while. And a more definitive ending would have been ideal - but this is just me being nit-picking on what is a great track.

Six more, this time....

oddbods finger - i got no time
Yeee-hah. Great lyrics, and beautifully executed. The musical style may not be my most favourite, but you gotta have talent to pull this style off convincingly, as you clearly have with this track. Superb mix and production. And you managed to turn file three into something attractive - another major achievement! Well done.

nikp2000 - into night
You have given File 1 a uniquely personal touch with this arrangement. Smooth, but with a slight edge, this track rewards complete absorption, transporting you to a different place altogether. The lead guitar works really effectively. Stirring stuff.

knockman-wildchurch - frogs
Good to see that you have been able to free yourself from nappies for long enough to contribute this month. You haven't lost your touch. Gently evocative and touching - although the bass sound is slightly disturbing, and seems a little out of place. This definitely has the knockman touch.

Hovmod - Funfair
I hear you have been playing with your new toy. Must get one of those myself. The sound effects suit the choice of track perfectly. Although there is the odd little thing that sounds out of place - the electric guitar towards the end, for example. And there is the odd point at which it appears that the microphone got bumped. But overall, this is just like being there!

Zombie Queen - Muppet Mice Space Wrestling Event
This had me laughing. Great rendition that takes the Mickey (excuse the pun) out of what otherwise is a pretty boring standard theme. A wonderful novelty track, with some great sounds.

sttjelle - Fueltrip
You have definitely upped the energy level on this compared with the original, and done a marvellous job of it, too. I would have liked to hear a little more guitar solo in there - we get a little snippet at the beginning and the end, but not enough. The changes between piano and organ avoid the track becoming repetitious. The piano chords in particular are wonderfully luscious. Great job - one that is definitely on high rotation on my mp3 player.

On the home stretch now....

Last 6.....

Steve Holt - Reality TV
Nothing at all wrong with your singing on this - good job, harmonies included. The xylophone/bell sound doesn't quite seem to fit the serious nature of your lyrics, however. Perhaps with another, darker arrangement this could be an excellent track.

Spirulence - On a Road with Sounds
The sounds in this are wonderfully thick and lush - some great choices there. The bass, in particular, stands out, and sits wonderfully in the mix. I am not sure that the change in rhythm through the track quite work for me, however. Nicely mixed and produced, overall, although I would have gone a little easier on the reverb on the lead. Good job.

scotthagel- barrelbuster
A farily faithful rendition of the original, with some interesting bottle-like sounds at the start. Interesting percussion, and well constructed track.

Scoops - Rejuxtaposition - The Pass By
Great job on this most difficult of the four files to work with. The guitar work is great, and the organ sits alongside it nicely. This is a definite improvement on the original file. Great work - pity about the fade out ending - I would have loved something more dramatic!

rachmiel - sci-fi-polka
I can just imagine astronauts dancing to this on the moon, or some other planet with reduced gravity. A wonderful mix of ponderosity (is that a word?) and out-of-this world space sounds. Thankfully far enough removed from the original to make it very listenable.

offthewall - AlongTheRoad
I am afraid that the penny whistle in this just doesn't work for me - a stronger, more certain delivery with a purer, and perhaps more plaintive, tone would have set this off nicely. There are some notes in there that simply sound off-key, unfortunately. Perhaps this month didn't really suit your talents.

Whew, that was a marathon session. 16 on the short list. Almost time to vote.

Thanks - Not really about clowns though, more about someone going off their nut :nutter:, but maybe that creeps you out too.
slartibartfast wrote: 1-2-Many - Clown College
Great lyrics, excellently performed. The "circus" interlude at around 1:10 is a highlight. I can recognise many different elements of File 4 in this, but the track is still a cohesive and well-constructed whole. Great work.
Thanks, from recollection I only used midi tracks 1-10. The rest didn't quite fit in and/or seemed like another song. For the record only the Homer and the baby giggle are samples, the interlude is all VSTi, something I'm a bit proud of

Much appreciation to you guys who make the effort to review submissions every month - it's no small task, but it makes up a nice part of the contest experience. THanks! :tu:

Thanks for the honest review.
I totally agree. I'm afraid that I was quite 'out of my depth' this month, not being a midi-ist at all.
If I can find some time I am considering re-doing the whole thing using different presets and fine tuning the timing issues. All part of the learning curve.
:(
Thanks again for the crit.

slartibartfast wrote:Echo Voodoo - A Polka List Now
I think you should have named this the Spongebob polka - the sounds sound very Spongebob-ish, and the vocals sound as though they were recorded underwater. And we all know how much money the creators of Spongebob are making. Quite a curiosity. Could you have got that bass any squelchier? I enjoyed this track a lot.
The title was destined to be what it was, as all puns are; there was nothing I could do about it, honest!

Thanks for the kind words, they are always appreciated. Nice job reviewing so many entries in a short period of time, too.

d'Mast - Midiocore -> #2 - The energy of this piece really shifts around, it gets a bit too frantic for me in spots. Nice percussion work. Good work.

papatomany - General Nuisance's Last Stand -> #3 - A heavy, solid, and disjointed dream indeed. Interesting sound selection, evokes an ominous feeling for me. Vocals and lyrics are perfect for the mood.

This is fantastic. I've been really encouraged you and others about my singing. It was just one of those things you think you really can't do all your life. My mum put me into an audition for the cathedral choir when I was 11. They very nearly laughed when I sang. Now I'm told it sounds OK - how many decades did I carry that around for? No I'm never going to be a real singer, but at least I'm not scared to open my mouth now. This is the biggest prize for me!

Thanks again

OK... here's my last batch of comments (hope I didn't miss anyone).

--------------------
streifentier - The Giant Mushroom Tree
Intro is awesome. Love the atmospheric Hollywood-esque strings. The narrative is a nice touch... but wait... what happened to poor Johny upon tasting of the forbidden fruit (errr.. fungi)? The hats (and to a lesser degree, the tambs) in the drum programming seem quite piercing on my setup. They kinda drown out the cool guitar layer.

--------------------
Scoops - Rejuxtaposition
Awesome axe wielding there. The harmonizing sounds great. In fact, everything in this mix sounds great. A well balanced mix and very cool instrumentation make for a very polished piece. I like it much.

--------------------
slartibartfast - Musical Instrument Digital Interface
This is cool, in a painfully cheesy way. Love the early 80's style vocals (the lyrics are amusing... with far too much truth to the content). The vocoder adds that extra bit of nostalgia to this one. All humor aside, I like your interpretation of the original MIDI file.

--------------------
Markleford - Surprise! More Math-Jazz!
It's kind of ironic how this piece reinforces the sentiments expressed in the previous track... although... the sax and trumpet solos do sound quite good to me (even if they were algorithmically generated). Mix sounds clean and nicely balanced, but overall, it does seem to be lacking a bit of that human touch... Though I'm far from familiar with jazz compositions.

--------------------
1-2-Many - Clown College
Nice rendition of the original... Your voice is shockingly similar to Geoff Tate of Queensryche (I'm certain you've heard that comparison before). Love the big-band break @ 1:05. Sounds huge! I really like all the little twists-n-turns you've incorporated throughout. Super work.

--------------------
steveholt - Reality TV
Pretty little ditty here. Love the lyrics! Most certainly reflecting the sentiments of much of the entertainment-seeking populace. (ok... maybe just the chin-stroking intellectuals). The choice of instruments work for the most part. Love the glocs... don't so much love the raspy quality of the banjo (or is that an oud?) It doesn't seem to behave nicely alongside the harmonising vocals in certain spots.

--------------------
Barnadine - peppermint glade
Took quite a dark turn there at the 0:33 mark. Wasn't expecting that. I really like the foreboding atmosphere that dark tonewheel sound creates. I also really like the vocal processing dispersed throughout (especially @ around 0:55... fantastic!). The vocal beat-box stuff sounds a bit avant-garde for the moody, stylish feel to this track. Still an amazing piece of work though.

--------------------
Zombie Queen - muppetmice
Just plain wacky. The intro got a little irritating (especially that electric current noise... it was like I had a mosquito in my left ear). The changeup @ 0:40 is by far the nuttiest thing I've heard in months! ... And it just gets crazier as the track progresses. Sounds like you sampled a few porn-flics in there (WTF!?!?) You've now effectively bumped rachmiel out of the 'most bizarre' track seat. I need a drink (or eight).

--------------------
d'Mast - Midiocore
When I first heard the original midi file, I wasn't sure what anyone would be able to do with it. The entries based on it have been pretty amazing though. And yours is no exception. This is a very listenable (and re-listenable) track you've made here. The only thing I found a bit distracting was the uber-wide leslie effect on the organ. It's a bit too pronounced for my liking.

--------------------
papatomany - General Nuisance's Last Stand
Definitely a 'dream sequence' piece. Has a surreal quality to it. The intro percussions had me envisioning something entirely different than what actually unfolded within this track. The saloon piano sounds good (albeit very 'wet'). The pipe organ sounds a bit like a 'tacked-on' addition... I'm undecided about it being in there. Guess I was expecting something more 'saloon-ish'

Well... that's it for me. Some truly memorable moments while listening and commenting. The MIDI idea is something that should be revisited again in a future compo. Hearing the diverse interpretations of the same track was a trip!

I'm all compo'd out now for a while.

Thank you very much, Slarti, for the review!...yeah, the piano was for the funeral :hihi: and has to be a bit on it's own.
Thanks for the hms so far, EVE, Laguna and Advaya.

Last batch...hope I didn't miss anyone. My ears were different this month as I picked up a new set of monitors and I am still adjusting.

Nils_B: A Different State of Mind - There just isn't much to not like about this. Just as last month, I love the vocal. I actually like the blend of it at the end the most. I wasn't fond of the percussive sounds in the background, although it fits the story. I DID enjoy the guitar work! The first acoustic entry is nice and the electric doubling beginning at 1:03 is wonderful. Outstanding stuff!

stressed: on the road - The vocal work was a bit covered and stiffled. I liked the brief guitar lead but the track just ended too abruptly for me. It was on the right track, just sounded like maybe you ran out of time before you posted it.

streifentier: The Giant Mushroom Tree - The tambourine and hat/cymbal(?) seemed a bit loud to me just after the :30 mark. I found it a bit distracting. Other than that, this is a very cool track. Heck this would have worked last month as well. Your voice is very soothing.

Scoops: Rejuxtaposition - The Pass By - I absolutely love this mix. The guitar sounds are so full, yet they don't cover the rest of the sounds. This is one for the keeper folder.

slartibartfast: Musical Instrument Digital Interface - Gary Numan meets Devo. Great groove and 80's vibe. Fits nicely into 2 minutes and the vocal processing is superb. Nicely done!

Markleford: Surprise! More Math Jazz! - This is just downright genius. You really ought to send this off to Wynton Marsalis. I can hear him playing this in a heartbeat! Fantastic concept and brilliantly creative.

1-2-Many: Clown College - Another one with that 80's thing goin' on. Well, until the quote from Barnum and Bailey's Favorites. :) The transition to and from the quote is very well done. Another nice vocal...uh, no, I am not referring to Homer.

steveholt: Reality TV - First, I know what you mean about Reality TV. OK, the vocal is nicely done. It did seem to get a little lost at the chorus. The timing of the backing vocal is off in the second verse but works well the rest of the way. This builds to the end well. Great!

Barnadine: Peppermint Glade - So many nice vocals this month and this is another! I didn't really get into the percussive sounds but the rest all sat nicely.

Zombie Queen: Muppet Mice - A symphony of squeezy toys! I think most of these sounds came out of my kids' toybox. Refreshing and completely different.

d'Mast: Midiocore - Awesome sonic palette. Loved all the stabs. Some of the best dynamic contrasts of all the entries. Really liked the drums sounds in this one. Excellent!

papatomany: General Nuisance's Last Stand - Tom Waits is alive and well but his voice has improved. :) Another "out-there" take on the barrel. The dreamscape concept is well represented here.

Great job to all this month!

Michael

I also think you're pretty good singer, Bob Dylan probably wouldn't get a job at the choir either, so?

You're completely wrong, most of these sounds comes from MY kids toybox.

to advaya:
No, no, no, I didn't sample porn at all. I made this sound with my own mouth, actually it doesn't sound much like sex to me, at least I by myself make completely different sounds while making sex.

That is EXACTLY what I said...MY kids' toybox. Stop trying to confuse me. It takes much less effort than that. :bang:

Thanks,
The ending was done as a fade out and with less drama intentionally. I thought it was a nice release to the tension created earlier

Again, Thanks.
It's when people notice my mix, is when I get the ALOT satisfaction out of this contest. I obsessed over this one. It was a somewhat tough nut to crack. There are parts when there are six guitars (including bass) playing in harmony. It's tough to get it so that they don't wash each other out.

And again, Thanks.
The "keeper folder" comment is really the ultimate comp one musician could pay another. I'm honored.

I have a really fast computer, some good mics, vintage musical instruments, and lots of fancy software. Just need some talent
