Thanks to all the reviewers, it's a real encouragement to me to read nice comments and helpful suggestions.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get my list down to 10 again. So many great entries...
Barnadine - Peppermint Glade
The appeal of many your tracks is the superb quality of your vocals combined with lovely guitar and sparse percussion in a "less is more" kind of way, but with this one more is even better
Another keeper, loved it!
d'Mast - Midiocre
The intro made me a bit dizzy listening on headphones. I like the orchestra sounds, the sounds you used work well together I think. Lovely bass sound.
Markleford - Surprise! More Math-Jazz!
Excellent drums and bass! Unfortunately I never really appreciate a sequenced horn section, somehow just doesn't sound right. The piano sounds really good though. Good job!
Papatomany - General nuisance's last stand
Cool! I like the way it sounds like the music is played down the street. Would've liked the vocals to be like that. I don't really like this rosamunde melody at all but in your track it sounds pretty good.
Scoops - Rejuxtaposition - The Pass By
Great work on the guitar Scoops, this track is just great. Makes me want to get my guitar and play lousy solos heh
Slartibartfest - Musical Instrument Digital Interface
Love the vocals in the verse, like daft punk on a sugar rush. The track feels energetic and robot-ish at the same time. Liked it!
1-2-Many - Clown College
Great version! Vocals rock, and the music and themes are very well mixed.
Steve Holt - Reality TV
Your voice sounds a bit like Jello Biafra singing a lullaby to his grandmother (like a more modest version of him heh), really like them. Cool lyrics, reality tv sucks. It's not real anyway, it's usually a dramatized version of the worst kinds of real.
Great entry!
Stressed - On the road
Somehow I feel the lyrics should be one note later or something. Probably just me. Nice guitars, you could put the vocals in the front a bit more.
Zombie Queen - Muppet Mice Space Wrestling
Funny but very well put together, great sounds and mix.
Steifentier - The Giant Mushroom Tree
Although there's not terribly much variation in the track it doesn't bore. I really like your way of storytelling, well done

thanks for the reviews, much appreciated.
some quick listening notes, order as served up by winamp:
emerald tablet - tasteful arrangement, sweetly sung, lovely. one small point: for a few months now your vocals have been distorting on the louder notes, so i presume it's an intentional effect (or a dodgy mic), but i honestly don't think it adds anything in a song like this.
gag3 - i find this a bit inscrutable; not being american i'm probably missing some cues, but it's lost on me whether this is intended to argue for a conspiracy, mock conspiracy theorists, or just render it all absurd by stepping out of the human fray altogether. either way, the melding of flippant music with that phone conversation is very disturbing, leaving no catharsis, just a lump of undirected distress. hmm.
stressed - shy singer syndrome, manifesting as some unnecessary chorus-type effect(?) murking up the vocal: a shame as this is a good solid arrangement. if you want to sing out, sing out!
beardedone - nervy and ethereal, i like the hushed, anticipatory feel of the percussion, the ending's a little abrupt.
markleford - the exactly cloned timing of the two brass parts in the non-solo sections overemphasises the non-human aspect a little, but this is a good idea handled well.
papatomany - this appeals to me, the melancholy closing time mood, decrepit and waitsian, with snatches of brahms to add to the gloom. probable vote.
patrick9 - nice grumbly bass and squelches, though the shake-its feel like they've wandered in from another song.
streifentier - strong intro, flags a little in the instrumental sections, but the likeable narration brings back focus; rather well behaved for a mushroom trip.
new easy - smooth; verse vocals get a bit craig david, but things come together nicely for the choruses.
1-2-many - brassy and confident, verse melody feels like it's riding on the backing a little, could be a little more dynamic, but i like the build-up during the choruses, nice fake-out ending halfway through.
core - faithful interpretation, but a very tasteful choice of sounds here. probably the best of the faithful entries this month. crying out for a vocal though. sing next month, core!
d'mast - extrovert take on #2 which, for all its drama, is eclipsed for me by the beautiful hushed outro: would have enjoyed an entire piece based on it.
echo voodoo - heh, i'm guessing the pun title preordained things here; promisingly fuzzed up and dirt-encrusted production, sadly kneecapped by another case of shy singer syndrome: vocals mixed down and gunged up into intelligibility. sing proud!
hellbilly - well crafted, builds nicely, but the relative straightness of the interpretation might be a drawback in a month where the listener will hear a dozen versions of the same theme. do i get glimpses of an interesting percussive element in there, recessed in the mix, hidden under the overdominant shaker/hihat-equivalents? could be drawn forward perhaps.
ianweb123 - charming stuff. i love the imaginatively eclectic mix of sounds, and for all the delicacy here, there's a strangely earthy, homespun feel. ghastly fade ending, but i think this'll be getting a vote regardless.
ixox - lovely as usual. artificiality of the violin is a bit evident during the instrumental section, but nothing too alarming. i couldn't understand all the lyrics, and perhaps i'm mishearing, but...
... i like how sweetly you sing those final verses.
johnny quest - ah, this is great. from an uber-quantised midi file you've somehow pulled this loose, lazy, ska-toned swagger. very human, and just what i wanted to hear tonight. easy vote.
kundara - satisfying bass treatment here, assured production with clever flourishes, but yikes - those high frequency synths are hard on the ears.
laguna rising - hmm, there's a sense of struggle with most of the file 2 entries, trying to open out and individualise such a meticulous, inward-turned composition. some interesting jazz inflections here (though the snare's a little insistent), and i like the section from 0:50. yet as with some of the other #2s, overall this sounds a bit overstuffed to my ears, an abundance of ideas without quite enough space to let them breathe.
lubi - chirpy interpretation, good bass samples, maybe run the vocals through a filter to cut the hiss, hooray for caterpillar invasions.
dj tubig/malice x - the most convincing interpretation of #2 so far, gives it a natural sense of flow and makes the disparate elements gel. surprisingly soft bass end.
max el belga - another good take on #2, civilises things a bit without losing that unsettling vibe, warm & deep production. who's the deep-thinking aussie at the end?
me109 - excellent mash-up. compositionally, the most adroit piece so far, especially the seamlessly blended gershbarrel second half. may get my top vote; if not, it's due to the instrument samples, which range from passable to, well, kind of grey and lifeless. i know it's unfair to judge a man by his samples, but your compositional skills are really showing the shortcomings of your sample library here. have you considered buying your local orchestra?
mellotronaut - shades of bowie and cave. the polyrhythms set up an interesting dislocation between the backing music and the vocal, a sort of communal autism. high-collared-shirt melodrama, hopefully sung with slow sweeps of the arm.
mmichalski - a relatively simple, understated interpretation, in a month where overstatement seems to be dominant. balmy and pleasant.
napalmbob - can't immediately pick which file this is, which is a genuine relief by this stage. good crisp production, nice bass, though the main raspy synth might be more effective if not so continuously used.
'mixdown'(???) - untagged file, length 1:59, possibly called 'everything flows'? another gentle understated piece courtesy of file 1, likeably sung, great guitar run at 0:39, might get a vote if i can figure out who it's by.
the rest in a while...

Thanks slartibartfast, and Barnadine for the review and nice words.
Mike, in the submission thread there is a link to the lyrics.
Yes, the end is not really soft !
I add to remove the 3rd verse (from the end) because of the 2 minutes limit... sorry Baudelaire, it means nothing like this....

Pretty darned insightful for a short statement. I have submitted simpler comps here so far, which generally won't score points on the creative meter with other composers/producers. That is fine with me. Sometimes providing a breathing point is exactly what is needed.Barnadine wrote:mmichalski - a relatively simple, understated interpretation, in a month where overstatement seems to be dominant. balmy and pleasant.

Hmm -- this sucks.
So far, the voting is going almost exactly along with my choices this month.
What the HELL am I doing wrong?
This means that, at least THIS month, I am not unique in my voting.
I HATE going along with the pedestrian crowd
ESPECIALLY when SHUSI is involved
or the insufferable RACKMYBALLS

...and, the POLICE!
Normally, I wouldn't have voted for ANY of these totally fooked, dufus-like, gay arsewits...
...
...
But...
...good music is good music...
Cheers,
Alejandro

the rest, as ordered by winamp:
offthewall - the stately setting has plenty of potential, but that central whistle is uncharacteristically dodgy and rife with bum notes, sounds like you're tackling the piece with a whistle in the wrong key and trying to fudge the accidentals with half-fingered holes. (which sounds a bit rude when you put it like that.)
rachmiel - oddly enough, i had a similar slow-polka idea - glad i ditched it, as it wouldn't have been this pretty. nicely spacious, ending feels a bit arbitrary.
scoops - muscular sound, good clear production, you've done a nice job imposing your own spirit on the strong-willed file 2, though i think i'd appreciate this one more if i wasn't suffering prog hangover from last month.
scotthagel - love the sounds in the intro section, in fact all the sounds... except that lead synth from 0:36 - grates on my ears in the upper register. enjoyable interpretation despite this.
slartibartfast - very effective match between form and lyrical content, well-barbed chorus lyric, i assumed the last couple of midi tracks in file 4 were from another song, but kudos for integrating them.
spirulence - i feel i've heard this tune about 50 times by this point, but this version adds a welcome bit of pep, nice stretch of percussion from 0:10.
steve holt - i like your voice, raspy and expressive, who does it remind me of? shane howard maybe? sane lyrics and a wonderfully spare opening. i was actually a bit disappointed when the our old friend file 4 kicked in at 0:25... probably shouldn't be listening to all the entries in one go, as i'm becoming allergic to those 4 tunes. i'll try not to let that prejudice me, as i think this deserves a vote. keep singing. (p.s. are you this steve holt?)
stjelle - another one that suffers from coming late in the list, after i've heard the tune very many times. sorry about that. a solidly crafted version though, with a nicely exuberant climax.
zombie queen - great set of sounds, the main tune (thankfully) submerged so that attention is focused on the bizarre trimmings. i really like this, it matches the bright-eyed, incipient insanity of listening to the same four tunes 40 times over.
farlukar - file 4 yet again, but tastefully and enjoyably done, with skilful use of distortion. if you can make me not hate the tune by this point, you're doing very well.
hovmod - a welcome interlude, and i'll just let this one wash over me without too much thinking, nice tendrils of music creeping in at the edges.
knockman - yes, there should be more songs about frogs. on a technical note, i like the sounds that go ooby-ooby in the background. the organ wears a bit with continuous use throughout the track, a bit more space might be beneficial, but a typically charming song.
nikp2000 - another pleasant and understated take on file 1, enhanced by some nicely tactile guitar (0:25+), reverse-ish effected guitar also well handled.
oddbod - adept as always, with a grim, fixed-smile cheeriness that serves the song's meaning well, but is a bit relentless after listening to so many polka variations this month. shades of that 'and when i die' song. i really like the creatively tuned wind instruments in the background around 0:25 and later. nice satire in the lyrics, though perhaps a little blunter than your usual. (fond memories of 'marmite on toast', a masterpiece of invisible satire.)
advaya - a nice way to finish, well chosen lead voice which cuts through the mix without growing annoying; 0:43 cutout is a nice idea on paper, but jolts a bit; song opens out nicely from more intimate beginning to larger finale.
--
i think that's the lot. let me know if i've missed you. apologies to those in this second batch, things degenerated a bit towards the end, late night, tired ears - sorry if you ended up with a 'my lord i'm sick of this midi file' style review. not the best month to review them all in one sitting. i'll relisten to my shortlist tomorrow with fresh ears before i vote.

Alex, did you mean to vote for ianweb123 twice? OK, I know the obvious answer is, no, you did not, but it appears you have. I mean, it was a great entry, but were you having a schizo moment at the time of casting your vote?
Just sayin'......

Thanks for the honest crit.Barnardine wrote:offthewall - the stately setting has plenty of potential, but that central whistle is uncharacteristically dodgy and rife with bum notes, sounds like you're tackling the piece with a whistle in the wrong key and trying to fudge the accidentals with half-fingered holes. It's good to know that you are astute enough in whistleage to recognise the possible problem, however it was worse than that really!
Being distinctly 'un-midi' I spent so much time wrestling with all those midi files to make sense out of them that I ended up with not enough time to concentrate on the audio recording. Had to finish the whole piece in two takes so couldn't find time to fine-tune the 'bum notes'.
'Will do better next time', was always on my school reports.
And thanks to NilsB for a vote.
I truly didn't expect any, this time.
