What is THE SOUND?

How to make that sound...

OK, this has been bugging me for a looooong time, and I thought maybe somebody can settle this for me.

I'm looking for the source of one specific sound effect, that's featured in dozens of movies and TV shows that I've seen.

It's this very distinct sucking kind of noise. It's always exactly the same, so it's some stock FX.

Sorry I don't now remember exactly the locations in all those movies and shows, but I'm pretty sure that at least in Bram Stoker's Dracula, there is a scene where the vampire jumps from a coffin, and the sound plays very clearly.

Also IIRC in Doom II when the head is shooting the boxes in the endgame, the emanating sound is this one. But I'm not 100% about this, it's years ago.

Sorry this is a weird question, but it almost starts to feel like some inside sound designer joke, because when you start to hear it, it's _everywhere_!

Hah, yeai I feel paranoid now :P

But, anyway, it's like everybody is just picking the sounds from the same pool or something...

I'll try to track a sample down too.

Ah, THAT sound. I can't help but laugh every time I hear it. To me it's worse than "."

It was used in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV series), a handful of low-budget SF TV shows, a local radio commercial, the psi weapon sound effect from the game Alpha Centauri, at least one other not-too-memorable game I tried, and it appears in a track on Run Level Zero's album Walk the [Psycho]path. Probably more places.

OMG, I'm not the only one aware of THE SOUND :D

Kudos to foosnark - Run Level Zero was some good sh*t! It harkens back to a simpler time in EBM, like Orange Sector...but darker.
