Good points. I also have expectations about brass or others sounds. I just think it's odd how usually "anything goes" in terms of critiquing instrument sounds, except when it approaches realistic brass, and expectations are upset.Ixox wrote: Interesting...
But i don't think it's a choice.
My brain is wired that way. (and maybe other people's brain who fell like me)
If i hear a too bad trumpet sound in a solo, that can prevent me from enjoying the rest. I just think "Aouch !! too bad...".
I cannot do anything for this.
We all hear songs differently, else we would all have the same top 10 list

I think probably the human voice has the highest threshold. Maybe brass is the closest to that in sound quality.Khepira wrote: Good points. I also have expectations about brass or others sounds.

I think it's linked to what you are used to hear... Brass are in every style of music, everybody know how they should sound.steveholt wrote:I think probably the human voice has the highest threshold. Maybe brass is the closest to that in sound quality.

But, by the Godz of St. Lamborghini -- in many cases it's merely the use of crappy FX -- like cheap reverbs with stuttering tails -- and bad mixing
If I use an echo/doubler FX on the cornet, Xavier will say: "You have a trumpet playing chords?!"

FX can be part of it... yes.xander wrote:But, by the Godz of St. Lamborghini -- in many cases it's merely the use of crappy FX -- like cheap reverbs with stuttering tails -- and bad mixingthat people are 'hearing' rather than a 'cheap brass' font.
But samples really do a big difference.
And concerning brass (whose attacks are very important, and whose spectrum is totally different when played softly or loud) you definitely need some libraries with several samples for each note depending on the velocity.

I actually play brass and sax and know how they should sound!Ixox wrote:I think it's linked to what you are used to hear... Brass are in every style of music, everybody know how they should sound.
But I suppose I just have that "close enough" evaluation in mind and concentrate more on the instrument idioms and style than the "sound". That's why I feel that Garritan Jazz and Big Band is suitable for my purposes. While something like Fable Sounds' "Broadway Big Band" sounds phenomenal, I'm not prepared to pay literally more than 10 times as much for it!

And in your case (to my opinion) it's "close enough" for listeners to be able to concentrate on what you wrote and not being perturpated with bad sounding samples.Markleford wrote:I actually play brass and sax and know how they should sound!Ixox wrote:I think it's linked to what you are used to hear... As you play brass, you would'nt be satisfied by something too far from real and i think you wouldn't post it.
Your "quality sound" work is surely unconscious.
By the way, I would suggest me109 to buy the library you use for his brass... The best exemple of someone who deserves a better library.

Is anyone else getting these weird mash-ups in their head after listening to a bunch of entries made from the same midi files?
Recently, I've had a mix of Clown College and Peppermint Glade rolling through my head, with 1-2-Many's voice on the verses and Barnadine coming in for the choruses. 1-2-Many's basslines and Barnadine's banjo/ukelele/plucked string thing. It's fascinating. Makes me wish they'd collab a new song using the same midi file.

No, Hush is you and me. That doesn't mean I'm you and him. Unless you're really him, in which case I'm you, but not the other way around. Let's keep this simple, shall we/I/you?mellotronaut wrote:no probs for you, EVE: you're Echo Voodoo, mello and sHushi....do the mix then.

I need to change the link to Barrelhouse as my web site has just lapsed and I have a new hosting space. Apologies if you have been unable to access the song for a few days - it should be OK after this.
Scoops or mods - could I revise the link please to http://www.catalyst.myzen.co.uk/07_04_P ... lhouse.mp3
Also Markleford - please could you change the radio link.
Thanks,
Pat.
