Hey everyone, long time reader, first time poster. I'm having a problem getting my microphone to work with FL Studio.

First off, here's the equipment I'm using:
M-Audio Keystation 49e MIDI Controller
M-Audio Fast Track Pro audio interface
Rode NT1-A Microphone
Acer Aspire 5050 AMD 64 notebook w/ 4GB RAM

I have the MIDI controller hooked up through the Fast Track and it's working fine with FL. However, my mic just doesn't give any sound. I messed with some settings in FL and I was able to at least get some sound out of it through the mixer using the User Guide tutorial but it was distorted and unrecognizable at best. I realize I'm being brief and I'm probably leaving out details (I'm at work currently), but if you need to know anything else, let me know.

I'm really frustrated because I've been working with FL for years and this is my first venture into vocals, so any help would be great!! Thanks!

Noah

you are sure that your mic works right?
was it distorted as in too loud, as in clipped?

I bought the mic yesterday. It's distorted as in clipped I guess...I'm hearing sound but it's very choppy and extremely noisy (not loud, noisy as in industrial futurepop noisy ;-)). I'm thinking it may be a problem on the software end, as I'm quite sure that I'm setting it up wrong. Could this also be a conflict with my onboard sound? I appreciate the reply.

If it is choppy that could be the buffer size, does the gui lag at all while recording?
If its clipped ie-Meters in the red, turn it down the mic gain!

Yes, the GUI lags like crazy! Turning down the mic gain gets rid of any noise and I can't even hear the distortion...this is incredibly frustrating! I'm going to go nuts on this when I get back to my apartment after work  :help:

really sounds like a buffer issue...you're likely going to have to increase the buffer length. This will increase your latency as well...however don't worry about latency, from what I see your card has a direct monitor option that will negate the latency issue.

Its probably the buffer size then, you are going to have to raise it (and the latency unfortunately) you could try rendering the other tracks so there is less cpu drain and record the vocals to that.
Your gear is pretty good, you shouldn't be having any problems

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the help. I'll try that when I get home tonight and I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks again!

By the way, when you say increase the buffer length, you do mean changing it within FL, correct?

And also, does anyone have any links or resources (even threads here) that instruct someone on how to add vocals directly into FL? I'm buying Sonar Cakewalk tomorrow but I would like to mess with this tonight. I've had no luck finding anything useful in the User Guide and Google is not helping me find anything relevant.

Thanks again.

Sorry for tacking one more post onto here, but I'm also using ASIO4ALL...could this be my issue? I just saw a thread here that seems to be having my same issue...I can't find out if my onboard sound card is ASIO capable.

in FL under Options>Audio click on the ASIO panel for asio4all and you should be able to adjust the buffers there. IL just included asio4all in FL7, so they must feel it's pretty compatible...I don't use them myself but I think you should be fine once you have everything set-up proper... :)

Great, I'll try that. I did some reading and it seems that the Fast Track Pro acts as it's own sound card? If I disable the onboard audio can I use the fast track as my main sound card, download the ASIO drivers for it and use it without any problem? Sorry for the overload of questions, I just really want to make sure I'm getting best out of my equipment.

I think I may have found a resolution to my problem:

If anyone is having a similar problem, check that link out, very helpful (as were you guys).
