Echo Voodoo wrote:Is anyone else getting these weird mash-ups in their head after listening to a bunch of entries made from the same midi files?

Recently, I've had a mix of Clown College and Peppermint Glade rolling through my head, with 1-2-Many's voice on the verses and Barnadine coming in for the choruses. 1-2-Many's basslines and Barnadine's banjo/ukelele/plucked string thing. It's fascinating. Makes me wish they'd collab a new song using the same midi file.
We could send you the files and you could do a mash up of what you're hearing, I'd be curious to hear what your are. ;)

I've never tried doing something like that, and I'm pretty sure I'd be hard pressed to make it sound like what was actually in my head, but if you and barnadine want to hear your tracks badly mangled, I'd give it a shot.

I would say "here are my reviews" but they're more like opinions. So:

HERE ARE MY OPINIONS

papatomany - General Nuisance's Last Stand I think you're having a mid life crisis. I like the verby piano and fiddle, very atmospheric. That organ is kick arse, pitty it doesn't last long. More organ.

d'Mast - Midiocore Retro start, mmm...rhodesy. Like the hand-drumming and the slow-down thingy. Where's the kick? Did you leave it in the tumble dryer with your socks? Oh, there it goes. Needs more kick. Doctors orders.

Zombie Queen - Muppet Mice Space Wrestling Event Wow, bonus points for the name Zombie Queen. Bonus points for unleashing you undead minions into the audible realm. Bollocks, a circus. Breathy thing is neat. More breathy thing.

Barnadine - peppermint glade It's like three ideas in one. And Ewan McGregor singing. Breathy bass is good. f**ked up samples should have been drumming instead. Could've been the next Irish #1 if you had drums. More Guiness for you.

steveholt - Reality TV Speaking of beer, were you drunk when you sung this? I like the lyrics, yay for TV violence. Musicals eh? Yeah, they shit all over soaps and big brother. Banjo? More rednecking for you.

1-2-Many - Clown College Like the messy drumming. Very severely retro. Neat singing too. Oh look, it's the stereotypical circus music. What could you possibly be signing about? I wonder. I like all the retro sounds. More retronica.

Markleford - Surprise! More Math-Jazz! Oh f**k yeah. Jazz: the father of glitch. Drumming good. Trumpets bad. I would love to see a trumpeterer play this track. Oh its a drum/piano duet. And the double bass kicks. More double bass.

slartibartfast - Musical Instrument Digital Interface Cool percussive bells. Yay, more retro. Unless you're really 1-2-Many as well... What was wrong with that Gag3 dick anyways? Did you do that vocal-pitch up with your voice? Solo good. The world needs more solo's. More solo's I said!

Scoops - Rejuxtaposition - The Pass By I think someone didn't get over last months contest. Thank God too. I think I already mentioned how awesomely awesome this track is. Its awesome. Very professional too. More awesomeness all round.

streifentier - The Giant Mushroom Tree Love the accent. Points for that. Nifty drumming. Really, really cool synth work. Love the sparkly sounds. More sparkly sounds. Pity it just fades.

stressed - on the road I like the sound of the drums. Has a very rock-ballad feel. Which is, unfortunate for you. You poor, poor man. Ballads. No more ballads. Ever. More guitar though. That was neat some neat little guitar snippets.

Nils_B - A different state of mind Love the ambient drumming stuff. Thats really cool. Very laid back track. Oh, theres birdies. Bonus points. More birdies. And bonus points.

rachmiel - Sci-Fi Polka Fooking awesome start. Makes me smile just listening. Nice bass drop. Very pro tweakage. Sounds like the intro track off an album. Crazy sounds. Love it. More love.

nikp2000 - into_night2 Crazy phatt bass stabbage. Was that with a real guitar? Harmonics are cool. Reversalicious! More reversalisisationals.

me109 - Rhapsody in Beer Oboey. Nice name. You get points for mentioning beer. More points if were vodka. Nifty friggen piano. Now what are doing? Its like a ballroom dance medley. More medley's.

kundara - DrumNJazz Tres cool. Electroey synth. Very groovy drumming. Yeah baby! Funky bass. Awesome. Vocal 'scratching', did you do that on decks yourself? More turntabilism.

oddbods finger - I Got No Time What the? Its like mountain music on crack. Loads of nifty intruments. Like the banjo's and whistly thingy. More whistles.

napalmbob - Heartache My personal favourite (hehe). Definately subwoofer material. The synth is over done, isn't it? I like the cowbelly thing the best. More toungue in cheekyness.

knockman - Frogs Hahaha. You have a funny way of signing. Lets all point and laugh. Like the wobbly stuff. And the lyrics. More wobbly lyrics.

Laguna Rising - Wanton Exaggeration I'd like to hear a longer version of this. I think the intro progresses too fast. Cool drumming. Really pro transitions. I love the way it falls apart at the end with the car sounds. More cars!!!

ianweb123 - Mike LeftField Neat intro. Top 10 hit - just add hip hop beat and r&b signing. AH. now its folksey. Irish folk gangster rap. I'm sleepy. More sleep needed.

Oh look, a coffee...

Several hours later...

advaya - Get off the Road Is that a guitar? I cant tell, but it's cool. Groovy breakbeat. Oh shit, watch out! Its a choir of Gregorians! Nice ending, beats fading it out. NO more fade outs.

offthewall - Along The Road Whistly thingy and breathy thingy and plucked harpy thingy work well together. Whistle sounds like an opera singer doing a falsetto sometimes. Very expressive though. Actually, is it a recorder? Like in school music classes? Holy shit, more recorderers.

spirulence - (title?) For those playing along at home, I'm just copying the names straight out of Marklefords radio thingy. Cool opening, like a fish in the face. Oh, like the crazy sounds and fast beat. Nifty slower beat bits. More of those.

Beardedone - OnTheRoad Fully sick drumming bro. Neat pianoy, oh that other things a bit harsh. Too much rez? Sparkley echoes are cool. Really cool phatt thing at end. More phatt shit homie.

Ixox - A celle qui est trop gaie Real acoustic? Sounds really friggen good. I like what's going on in the background with the bongoesqe thing. Violin solo is cool. French sucks. HAHAHAHAHAHA. No, more french lyrics!

sttjelle - Fueltrip Oh yeah, rock the house man! Wow its like a full rock ballad in half the time (thank god). Love a good bit of the keys. Was that piano part in the midi? Very cool. Uncool ending. More better endings.

core - Off the Road Phaser hihats? Cool anyways, I might sample them MWAHAHAHAHA. Synths are good, are they presets? Cool anyways. Opps, already used that one. Kick arse nethertheless. is that a word? cool glitchy stutters. More stutterers.

Hovmod - Funfair ... Didnt see this one coming. Very very cool soundscape. Like the 'sideshow' music going on. i assume thats where the midi's went. more assumptions.

Jonny Quest - M I D I F O U R Start seems 60's, even though I really dont know what the 60's sounded like. Acid beatles? Love the guitar and sax? sounds. More sex. Yeah, I meant that.

Legion Hush - New Easy_Tumblin Down
Reminds me of super nintendo. Sounds like the theme to a pokemon spin off. I dont know if thats good or bad. OOOOOOOh, gated guitar. Drums sound acoustic too. Nifty. Nice singing too. More Nintendo breaks.

scotthagel - (title?) Did you just change the sounds? You sneaky devil! They're are f**king crazy!!!!! You nuts. Like Mr Giggles. He lives in a cage. Hes a hamster. More crazy caged hamsters making loony circus music on acid.

Emerald Tablet - (title?) 80's McFunk. Love the drums, just add slap bass. Oh now you f**ked it. Oh, but you have such a pretty voice. Yay, wobbly synth! Shouldve vocoded the singing and mr wobbly, that wouldve been freaky. More vocoders, pretty please.

MaliceX - Ambiguous Decision to Kill (weird shortversion) More 80's. Sounds kind of electroey. Nice distortion. Oh, speedy gonzales time. Cue evil bass. Agro drumming. Me likes. I'd hate to see the normal version, that was wicked. More fubar mixes.

mellotronaut - Why Rosamunde Died Classic guitar introing. Anyone tell you your singing is creepy? "a corpse is a corpse" you get points for that. Look out, the zombie's are coming! nice freaky synthy stuff on the end. More heebie jeebies.

mmichalski59 - They Fly To Heaven Nice soft intro. Really cool bongoing. Soothing piano. Yawn. Some sunshiny flute. I'm sleepy again...

...'I dont wanna go to school mummy, my maths teacher's a drunk'... (more childhood regression).

Several hours later...

Max el Belga - Mad Midi HA. Neat samples. Cool sparkly stuff too. Very spacey. Really cool percussive stuff in there. Like the bass pitch down. More pitch downs.

gag3 - 9/11 Roll Out the Barrell Watch out, its a glitcher/sampling pirate! That whistle is vicious man. You should join psyops or something. Ignoring the political stance (which i totally friggen agree with), the music should've been louder. More loud music!

Echo Voodoo - A Polka List Now That is one phatt fucken bass. You're crazy by-the-way. Freaky voice, what effects are on that? I hope there is effects on that, otherwise...YOU'RE THE SPAWN OF SATAN! More spawn.

Hellbilly - Pollyanna Love that winding down noise. Sweeeeeeeeeet drumming. What is that trumpet thing? Really cool build. Watch out, im poplocking to this shit dogg. break it down booooyy. More pop-lockage.

Patrick9 - Barrelhouse Another phatt bass. And absolutely mental too. What goes in some of your guys heads? Probably the same as what comes out of my ... fingers (cause im typing and all). Infectious beat. You should try making Psy/Goa/Isra what the f**k ever it's called. More what the f**k noises.

LUBI - In The Chambers at Night Like that loose string sound. Yeah, a chicken. She has a sweet voice. Points for that. And the flight attendant thing. More flight attendants bonking movie stars.

farlukar - Remote Commander Cool phattness. Neat bass progression. Retro electro-y. Really neat drum sounds. And the harsh thing doesnt get too harsh. Very cool. More coolness.

I doubt anyone will read all the reviews, just as well, beacause I have a very limited vocabulary. Which is no surprise since it's surprisingly diffulcult to find a thesaurus in this cardboard box i live in. If it werent for this computer i would go nuts. Some might argue that there are thesaurii on the net, and to youse i say: take a joke.

First verse had Classic Compressor and GGrain, the 'rap' section featured CamelCrusher, and the final verse used Classic Compressor and Classic Chorus. It's the GGrain in verse one that gives that spawn-of-satan feeling, methinks.

The bass is FabFilter One with the appropriately-named Phat Bass preset.

Thanks for letting me know I am crazy. That's the way I felt when I made the track, and it's nice to feel validated.

Good job on reviewing everything in one go, BTW. I don't think I could manage it in one sitting, which is why I spread them out over the month.

Post

Let me start by saying a big THANKS to all of those that have voted for my comp this month. Especially to Laguna Rising, MaliceX, and me109 for the big #1 :)
