it's very pretty.

but this is KVR. The Antress fiasco proved you shouldn't play with peoples preconceptions of what something should sound like. Stick in such an obvious LA-2A GUI to your plugin and half of the people will praise it as the best authentic LA clone since sliced bread and toasters, and the second half will be calling you a dick for trying to fool the other half.

NOBODY will remember you were actually just paying homage to design X from year Y. :hihi:

Ie. change the color scheme and you'll be alright. remember to stick to warm colors since it's "vintage" and people will hear the change respectively.

I kid. I kid.
While that is sadly quite true, there are also many, many people who couldn't care less if a plugin sounds like this or that, only if it sounds good. Like I even knew what a some LA thingy sounds like, even less if it's something that I would like to have my limiter to sound like.

To be honest knowing that the plugin is made by ddummer means a lot more to me than knowing that it is inspired by some esoteric hardware unit, at least I have some point of reference and can actually do my own comparisons and evaluations.

I really like the antialiased markings on your mock-up, sharp is beautiful

the GUI is super clear and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I was just kidding around.

Post

Yes I knew you were kidding about the GUI, but the part about KVR response is, I'm afraid, spot on.

Post

GUI is lovely!!! KVR is lovely, but not as much as the GUI!!! :hihi:

Hi
I must be a little bit dumb, but i read on the first page that there is a limiter section, and when i use this plugin, it often let the output go a lot over 0db...
Is there any "magic" tweaking ?

Very nice GUI for the forthcoming plugin, btw (as always ;))

ah the myths of digital age. Waves L1 and the modern brickwall mastering scene idiots started that one.

a limiter in the classical sense doesn't mean that nothing is let through the threshold. LN1176 and LA-2A are both limiters, yet both will let a PLENTY through their 0dB threshold.

and hey, there's absolutely no reason why one would need a brickwall limiter anywhere but as the absolutely LAST plugin in the mastering chain.

Post

ok
(tls saturated driver, pocket limiter and tubelimit dosen't let anything pass above 0db if i'm correct)...

Track limiters can be usefull to deal with levels more accurately before a mixdown (in my case, mainly to "eat" some cymbals or synths resonance peaks), and in a live context where you can' t always predict what's going to happen...

The best comment I read about the antress- or whatever "emulating product X" - theme. I am very glad I can use the ddummer - plugins since quite some time, and I might be among the many musicians here at KVR that learnt a lot from them and other good effects how compressors, limiters and whatnot work, without knowing how expensive old hardware effects work(ed). Simply great and fun to be able to play with all this and make your own mind about it.

Trust me, I'm aware of pushing the envelope by even hinting towards the UAD direction
but here is the way I'm thinking:

If I had the time and effort I would buy a hardware clone in pieces of a La2a and build it.
But I wouldn't go for the real deal that is with tube amps and transformators ect.

What I would want is simply something that looks like the good old hardware thingy
but it could be made out of cheaper components, only to get the feel of it.

But in the end I would probably say to myself: "Heck I'm using virual stuff all the way
so the hardware unit would just be standing there looking pretty"

That is why I would go for a programmed one instead. The hardware concept but with
"cheaper" parts like the vu meter (300% easier to program a straight line instead of animating a needle, yes I would animate and not use a drawed line).

So if I want a grey thing with two knobs I guess I'm dangerously close to the real thing
already... turn it into green and we talk joe meek and so on...

One knob to compress and one to make up the gain + a switch to select "not squashed" and "more squashed" and you end up with a copyright problem?

Well I want the look of what I'm trying to do and that is my own little uad package,
but I trust myself in that it will sound tbt and not uad in the end and I'm sure the
GUI will turn into some other color IF the "Look" is there....

Always been a big fan of the TbT plugs, but... are those flathead screws on that thing?
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Post

perhaps... maybe I'll go for "insix" ones in the end...

Post

well as you said it's a prototype. you use whatever screws you have lying around.
