Well, I'm using a Behringer UB1002 right now, and I love it. I know many hate Behringer, but I'd recommend it anytime. I use it for mic, guitar and monitors.

do you have passive monitors? if so how do you cooncet these up so the mixer controls the volume?

No, I use active monitors (ESI Near05). And correction: Sorry, I have the UB1202, not the UB1002. Same thing, just a little bigger. :D

There's a monitor out section right up at the top, and the slider controls the volume, couldn't be easier. I should've gone up one more model, so I could kill the monitors and still have headphones; presently, I have to turn off my speakers to get just headphones. If you're using passive monitors, then it's up to your preamp to control gain. EDIT: or, more accurately, you could do as he suggests below! :D

Connect the control room output on the mixer to the amp , and your soundcard to the 2 track in/out on the mixer. Then when you press the 2 track to control room button, the signal from your PC goes to your amp. You control the volume with the ctrl room/headphone knob. The main fader on the mixer controls what gets sent to your soundcard input.

Are there any small (circa 4 stereo line channels) and reasonably priced mixer options that aren't either Mackey/Tapco, Behringer, Samson or Soundcraft?

I think you listed all the affordable choices right there! :-o

I even just added Samson to the list! I'm not ruling them out, but they are the ones I already know about. I've always wondered if there were any cool little boutique mixers aimed at home users/budget studios/musicians that I'd never heard of.

[edit] Google just pointed me to Phonic, anyone ever try one?

Ah! Cool, I thought you'd tried and disliked them all.

You know, shamann, those Phonic ones look so much like the Behringers that I'm wondering if they share some plumbing!

I wouldn't be surprised.
