I've been a soft synth musician for a while now... but after going to guitar center I have realized my passion for keyboard synthesis.

But I am in a tough situation.

I love the SH201 from Roland. Its cool anologe synth sounds is exactly my style and it is within my price reach. But... I dunno how I would get any acoustic sounds out of it, So then I looked at a Juno D... But then It had little anolouge sounds.

I havent really tried the Fantom X or the V synth and most of the Korg stuff is unimpressive (exept for the Radias and Oaysis)

If anyones got any suggestions to purchase please let me know.

I'd advice to build up an arsenal of synths that excell at one point instead of all-in-ones (and being mediocre at all of that)

So buy the SH201 now, and save for an "acoustic" (cough) synth to get later...

For acoustic sounds software is pretty unbeatable. Perhaps a Roland rack with one of their orchestral cards would work for acoustic stuff too. To be honest, i'd concentrate on getting one really, really nice playing keyboard and use that to control other modules, but thats just me.

I no longer have it, but I REALLY dug my XP-30 -- it had the orchestral card and session cards built in, in addition to all the other many stock 'acoustic' sounds.

For analog sounds, it had some good ones off the bat, but a Vintage Synth expansion card was also available if those weren't enough.

On top of all that, it was also a pretty decent MIDI controller. Mind you, all it had were a couple of levers but there are other contollers you could connect to it for better real-time control.

Ultimately, I feel it was (and probably still is) one of the best all-purpose bang-for-the-buck synths you can get, but I still had to sell it.

Seriously, check one out if you can. Between its own sounds and having it control VST plugins, you ought to be set.
