minimoog- which to get!?

No offense, but are you sure that the velocity tracking is not activated on LUXUS? IMO, it looks somehow like it is affected by velocity and it's not just the amplitude. Or, perhaps the internal gain factors are different on the two, so same patches will sound different?

And, psychoacoustically, louder often sounds better.

I've not tried them, though, just speculation, and could be seriously wrong.

hrm. i just assumed the patches since they are named identically are also interpreted identically. let me do a visual comparison and check that.. didn't think of that.

ahh you know. it's all the same except for on luxus the filter is different. parallel mode, left and right both the same freq as the va version. velocity modulation has amp, filter, and keyfollow, but amp modulation is at 0 and filter is at 4.. maybe velocity is modulating the filter? hrm, it is preset 71 rhodes tremolo on both if anyone cares to look it's under poly heading in the list.

so is it only the stereo processing of the filter that makes this sound different? hrm. even setting velocity mod for filter to 0 the sound is still bigger/louder/whatever it is.

ok ive been checking it all out and by far the minimonsta is taking the cake. damn! i really likes it.

Pros: Bob Moog Signature, A Realistic and Professional Graphic Representation of the Minimoog D, Lots of Pro sounding Presets, TAE?? Softclipping option! 3 Skins that you can use, but you can only choose them once, and thats when you install it. Free updates! External input so you can use it as a fx processor. ALot larger userbase in general. Wicked sounding pad presets!! I love the Celm Pads, they are very cinematic sounding.


Cons: The Sound can really sound fat, but it has more of a digital sound, than a warm fuzzy analog sound. 6 Voice Unison will cause your cpu metre to hit 30% in Legato, if its less than 1.4 ghz. No Morph Feature. Dont scratch your cd, because once its shot, your not gonna be able to use your minimoog in its Gui mode or load presets from 3rd parties. Arturias forums suck.... its more expensive than the minimonsta

Pros: It responds and feels like a hardware synth in terms of playability!! Nice warm sound that is great for bass, Tons and Tons of Presets!! Morphing features like the MiniMoog Voyager! It has support for receptor if you get that. It uses OHMFORCE filters which sound great from guys who dedicate there life to making great filters. Friendlier support. The sound is less stiffer than arturias, like the sound of analog gear that gets used alot. More CPU friendly on most presets! Sounds nicer when you run distortion effects on it than arturias version. External input so you can use it as a fx processor

Cons: Unison mode just like the minimoogv will kill your cpu if its slower than 1.4 ghz, no softclipping , no moog stamp of approval on it, the gui looks less realistic and doesnt really give you the feeling your playing a genuine minimoog. It should be skinnable.....



MY opinion is, that if you WANT a super nice ANALOG sound that is good for making sounds and shit, then get the Wayoutware timeware2600, it has bass that sounds as big as both of the arturia versions, its just missing that special filter that the minimoog has.

I think you should download the demo of both, and test them out using your own "ears" because like Mr Solida said they are both great, and cover different grounds.

Nothing beats a analog synth better than a REAL analog synth. Virtual ones are ok, they are after all still just 1s and 0s that are coded.

The only thing they have over the Voyager, is that they are both polyphonic

The Minimonsta interface is actually one of my favorites ever designed, be it hardware or software, in that it's as easy & comfortable to use as a Minimoog yet provides modulation possibilities that rival most modular synths. Minimax still beats it & the Minimoog V by a wide margin in terms of sound quality but I always turn to Minimonsta first for more complex patches.

+ if you take the scope card and not the ASB, you can allocate the resources to Flexor 3, if you don't need the minimax and get the most flexible and best sounding virtual modular synth pack ever.

thats fine too. Its always an advantage to be able to put your hands on real knobs.

The scope advantage is that you can use the dsps for everything that is available and easily save complete projects.
The ASBs are fixed stuff.

Its a matter of taste.
Soundwise they are all top notch.

And personally I think they are well beyond the native ones...
the filters have a rich nice sound.
