1) Unsigned drivers are common for audio interfaces. The difference is just one OK click. Sometimes that's because the device drivers can do MORE than MicroSoft requires

But if the device is in your list of installed devices (look in Windows Control Panel - Sound and in your music software preferences) then it IS installed.

Look into the manual weather it should have a mixer / control panel and how to access it.

2) Sounds like the headphone amp of this card isn't than good. But: the AudioPhile didn't have any headphone outputs, so I wonder weather you have it connected properly. If it's not designed to take a headphone directly you should insert a proper headphone amp inbetween.

3) ASIO drivers are meant to be used by only one application at any time. If you want to "record" a VST it's called "export" or "render". Maybe you have to record the midi parts first

Create a stereo audio track in Cubase. Connect the FS1R to the IO|2 inputs. Record enable the track and press record. What's the problem ?

Regarding the distortion: I'd keep the headphone volume knob low. Maybe the upmost section of the knob is designed for monitoring very soft audio and not to drive the amp loud. The manual doesn't say anything about headphone impedance, so it could be that yours doesn't match. What happens if you connect the main out of the IO|2 to e.g. a hifi stereo and use that to monitor?

Regarding RMAA: the IO|2 does have WDM drivers, so it should work. Isn't it shown in the device dropdown lists at the top left of the screen?

You've described the characteristics of a rather cheap headphone amp design. Made in China for the lowest costs

For a "backpack USB interface" (that's how it's marketed) they've desided it's sufficient you hear something and quality comes last. Maybe low power consumption was also a consideration.

Did RMAA pass the level setting procedure? No sudden glitches in that? Sometimes it helps to change sample rate and/or bit depth. I know with my card it fails to test in one of the settings.

Regarding RMAA:
* Set the Monitor Mix knob to USB so output doesn't mix with input (prevent feedback!)
* Connect the Main Outs at the back with Guitar/Line inputs at the top. So you need two jack patch cables or simple guitar cables.
* Set the switch to Mic-Line for both channels
* Start RMAA's level setting procedure
* Adjust both Main Level and Gain of each channel (start with 12 o'clock setting for all) so level is sufficient and doesn't clip.

Good luck... Setting levels properly (find proper balance between output and input levels) can be difficult because this device doesn't have a software control panel that shows input + output levels. It only has LEDs for the inputs, not outputs.
