What are you still missing from XT2?

What's a Rewire? Does it make XT2 better somehow?

no, but as far as I remember, XT2 was supposed to be a complete one-stop music production environment for Win and Linux..jon wrote:What's a Rewire? Does it make XT2 better somehow?
I don't know how Rewire fits into that.
isnt it about getting Reason (which I dont use at all) to work with a DAW?
and if yes, why don't you just download Reaper and use XT1 as a VST in it and Rewire through Reaper? I think that Rewire for XT2 is as important right now as a "download free porn" button.
not that it's not fun and useful, but it should be way, way down on the priority list.
XT2 is still lightyears behind XT1. Rewire won't change that a bit.

Except the sampler is already part of XT2. I'm not asking anyone to drop Rewire from it, actually I haven't been asking anything at all, merely stated my opinion. And speaking of that, I'm a social-liberal. Doesn't count as left-wing, where I live. But yes, you could call me anti-corp when it comes to certain corps, I guess. Depends on them.druid wrote:Guckli (the anti-ReWire person): I can understand all that, and I know that many people who advocate Linux are often sort of like left-wing anti-coroporational sorts of people who dislike closed .. oh you know, all that. I like opensource software myself, or at least free alternatives and all that. But I'm not going to knock-back useful features of a host. I don't need the sampler in XT2, let's drop that just for me, shall we?
You're right that I went OT a bit, sorry for that. Might not have been clear from what I wrote, but I'm also using windows, even at home. I'm not quite ready to sell off all my plugs and programs that aren't happy with wine (On a side note I believe that wine is counterproductive in the long run, but that's even more OT). So it's not about linux. It's about me hating to see XT2 being bogged down in any way with a closed proprietary interface.druid wrote:Besides, I don't remember saying Jorgen should drop everything and include ReWire. Maybe others would like it, but I think you'll find most people who want it can live without it for a bit anyway, meaning your suggestion that it will hold up your Linux version is preposterous. No it won't! I wouldn't want to see Jorgen include ReWire support yet anyway as I personally feel XT2 isn't ready for that sort of feature yet, other things need more work. This thread was what are people missing from XT2... Missing doesn't mean desperately need right now.
And I still fail to see why it would be a negative to your choices, given that it won't slow down XT development. If you don't like it, don't use it. Well, actually, using Linux I guess you can't. I could probably use Rewire, and I would like to see it put in, but honestly I don't know how much I'd use it, so it's only barely more useful to me than it is to you. And yet, I still would like it in there!
Again I feel this is irrelevant. What Jørgen/XTsoftware can do isn't the issue, Propellerheads licensing practices is. By far most of the plugs I use are made by private individuals in order to scratch an itch. VSTs relative openness and EnergyXTs modular approach makes it possible. Propellerheads makes it impossible.druid wrote:And I'd be surprised if Jorgen does not have a registered business, or if he didn't, I'd be surprised if he couldn't do it whenever he needed quite easily.
He had plenty of help, not the least because of his original intention of making it alsa/oss only. The jack libaam.so source actually lies in a subversion repository, I forget exactly where. He isn't going to get the same kind of help for Rewire. By the way, jack might be ported to windows, some success was reported a year ago or so.Caleb wrote:I can understand that ReWire probably wouldn't benefit you too much on Linux Guckli. However, I didn't benefit a jot from the Linux port altogether as a Windows user and certainly didn't benefit from all the work jorgen did getting the jack implementation OK.
However, I didn't see either as a negative.

Stargard (in my best agent Cooper voice) - I can't help but agree with you on that! Coffee is excellent, by the way.

I would like to have a function merge to (or more) project to one big project. When i make music, i ussaly end up with a lot of unfinished projects. After a while, I merge some tracks from differen project to make one finished track. I would be nice if there is a way to do that sort of thin easy (altough i honestly don't know how you should implement such a thing)

I'm not sure what that had to do with the point I was making - but OK.Guckli wrote:He had plenty of help, not the least because of his original intention of making it alsa/oss only. No shit. Anyone would think it's still in beta or something.Stargard wrote: XT2 is still lightyears behind XT1.
There are clearly people here for whom Rewire is going to be very useful, if not totally neccessary. So you can't really argue that it's no use to anyone. Anything other than that is pretty much just complaining that Jorgen's development plan isn't organized to make it most convenient for you.
It's a rave, Lewis!

if you care to read my post, I didn't argue the point that is essential to some, I pointed out that there are other issues and essential features on the table that have been on said list for months. it has nothing to do with Jorgen's plans or my personal wishlist.DWb wrote:There are clearly people here for whom Rewire is going to be very useful, if not totally neccessary. it's all about the fact, that there are solutions to "your" problem out there, as we speak.
so why make your and Jorgen's life harder than it already seems to be?
why not use what's already out there, working?
I use XT1 more than any host I ever used before; not to mention some of the awesome midi plugs released by users of XT. in all honesty, I think that I barely scratched it's surface.
I bet that won't change with XT2's "official" release.
with or without Rewire, with or without the "download free porn" button.
that's my point of view; what was the point of your post again?

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet.
The one feature I'm missing from XT2 is the ability to open XT1 projects. I'd very much like to mix my projects with an ACTUAL MIXER, and the one in XT2 is extra-tasty. And it seems that now XT2 does everything needed to run XT1 projects.
That and gluing parts.

nope, not by a few thousand miles - looks like there's still a lot to explore for you in 1.4...perplx wrote:it seems that now XT2 does everything needed to run XT1 projects.

True, I've only ever used the Single arrangement mode. And I forget XT2 doesn't do MIDI plugins, which I do use. And I'm sure there are other subtleties I missed out on.
But my main point is: I think focus should be on bringing the functionality of XT1 to XT2 first. I imagine that's going to mean quite a change for things like the Live arrangements. But new stuff, like the drum tracks, doesn't make THIS selfish, ungrateful musician any happier.
