file extensions encyclopedia for vsti vst file formats?

does such a thing actually exist in list form or other doc format?
like...lets say download a wb1 patch and cant remember for which synth is made since im way too stoned...anything that will let me know which synth is that aimed to? ;P
happened already with fxbs in the past ..tried even opening em in text pad to see at the banks names or such

I have the same problem. I have several 'orphan' fxb's and fxp's lying around and I don't know to which VSTi they belong.
When I open them in a hex-editor I see at byte 16 a small string which is the 'code' for the VSTi.
I would like to know if and where those codes are documented.

still lost there myself...some of them i re-found them so i recalled the vsti were meant to work with but still some unknown..

I do find that frustrating, but here's a fun tip: Some hosts allow you to load presets for synths despite which plugin actually loads it, just some of the options are ignored/discarded. You can get some really strange sounds by doing that!
