If you want to play with Linux without reformating/repartitioning, give Wubi a try.
Wubi allows you to create a virtual Linux partition as a single file on your XP-formatted (NTFS) drive where you can install Linux. It also installs grub so you can dual-boot between Linux and XP. Installing is a simple double-click and uninstalling is done through Add or Remove Programs control panel. This is a good way to play with Linux without reformatting or repartitioning. You only need about 5 GB free space on your drive.

I installed Kubuntu this way and it works like a charm. Dual boot with Windows XP and Kubuntu sharing the same partition. No more virtual machines.

Of course you can, you just wouldn't be very happy with the result :P
Why? What do you imagine Ubuntu Studio to be, if not a set of packages installed by default that are only optional in the regular Ubuntu distribution? I suppose the kernel has some of the real-time choices made by default as well, but even that's not unique to Ub.Studio. What's to be "unhappy" about?

well with vanilla ubuntu.. one had to install to v6 before getting v7 from starting at v5.. at least according to the ubuntu installation docs..

my copy of ubuntu is hosed though.. I tried to upgrade to v6 and it trashed the video drivers so X doesn't load now.. ho hum..

I might just mow over the partition and start fresh.. although I'd really like to get into ubuntu and burn a backup of my work.. I'd hate to lose it all.. hmms

i'm posting from it and watching processor go, it's heavier than vista is (same config in fusion, 1gb ram, video acceleration, 2 cores) and it's about 30% heavier to run than Vista
i didnt manage to get any program to play without a glitch and the audio config options are not that much (I know i'm running in emulatin, but i don't have a crap computer either) but i'm really trying to like it

their site is hammered, i was on the first 4 people on the torrent so i didnt see i tgoing down but i guess many people wanna try this
i think it's wonderfull that again someone is trying to make an audio/video OS, like BeOS was supposed to be (pun not intended)
And it's not yet general mom and dad ready, compiling the driver?the OS UI is pretty Vista meets osx with the 2 black bars, but some apps looks like it's 1994 all over again, come on, we have wonderfull GUI artists williing to design and yet there is UI like freebirth...anyway, i'll stop whining and start trying the apps

edit
what another PITA jsut to install JAVA and all the permission denied crap everytime i wanna see a folder to clean crap make space

It seems they vastly underestimated how popular this release was going to be. Their website has been down for over 24 hours.

I ended up getting a copy from this torrent:

http://ubuntustudio.org/files/UbuntuStudio_7.04.torrent

Seems to still be working fine.

Cheers,

Malcolm.

Weird that you're getting these problems. I installed from the DVD and I'd have to say the installation was painless. No need to compile any drivers. Created a whole bunch of folders and installed nVidia drivers and never got any "permission denied crap".

I agree that it's still not "mom and dad ready", but I don't think that was their intended market. They're apparently aiming this toward media producers, so I guess they're assuming a certain level of knowledge.

I can see a bit of reading ahead of me over the next couple of days trying to work out Ardour and Jack. :)

Cheers,

Malcolm.

ok I finally got it all squared away (except for accelerated graphics - I still only get about 400-500 fps in glxgears)

but man what an ordeal.. ok so I updated from 5.10 to 6.06 via the command line (since X11 refused to load).. that actually went fairly well.. and got X to load..

ok so then I go to upgrade to 6.10 (since 7.04 requires that version in order to upgrade) and queue nightmare city.. :bang: I spent all evening yesterday working on that one.. eventually said forget it and went to bed.

got up this morning and starting working on it again.. ubuntu would seem to load but then it would take me to a blank screen.. I could type there.. but it didn't do anything else.. no prompt.. no hard drive activity.. no, just the ability to type words and see them echoed onto the screen. nice.

so I had earlier burned a backup of my important data.. so I rolled over the old partition.. and installed 7.04 vanilla (thinking for some reason that I'd need it to get ubuntu studio working)..

anywho I also burned a dvd of studio.. then upgraded from 7.04 to that..

I think im done with ubuntu upgrading for a LONG time.. I'm sure theres a lot of technical folks out there.. and I did things (in my normal fashion) the hard way.. but I still think they've got a long way to go to making it computer illiterate to semi computer illiterate capable.

whew.. and if anything I learned some extra commands.. so it wasn't a total bust..
