hello,

out of curiosity i would like to know if someone here owns eventide fx units and if they are still ahead to the software fx tools. maybe you can tell a little about your eventide gear and which units are the best for weird fx sounds. is it still worth it to spend such a lot of money on eventide gear?

If you're a PT TDM user, you can get the Eventide fx as plugins...

Funny, just today in another thread I was mentioning Eventide talking of the recent release of the native version of the SoundToys bundle (it was PT only until now).
As ew said above, if you're a PT user, you can look for the Eventide plugs.
If you use AU platforms (so Logic, DP, Live, etc), you could find interesting things in the SoundToys products (they are ex-Eventide people, enough said!), like Crystallizer (and hopefully soon SoundBlender too).

Still no PC VST version though... Kind of bogus if you ask me, not that it really matters to me anyway as they are all giddy about iLok. It would be nice to have them on PC, VST, and no dongle, but I'm thinking that will take something like hell freezing over to make that happen.

If I'm not wrong I've read somewhere else, directly from developers' words, that at least the rtast pc version is coming, try to ask them about their plans on vst...

I helped develop the 4000/4500 7000/7500 Orville 8000 and Eclipse and did the majority of the preset library during my tenure.

Quick answer is the hardware sounds better. I feel there are some softs which are in line with the quality (ArtsAcoustic, Izotope, PSP to name a few)

But when you get into building things. No software allows the depth and breadth of modularity including reaktor etc. you just can't get inside the actual effects modules as deeply.

That said there is plenty one can do with software which the eventides do not do (spectral transformations etc.) as well as easier automation issues. And of course you can load any soft anywhere until you run out of CPU.

Of course the power one would need to run the equivalent of an 8000... well you probably don't have it...

I feel the soundtoys stuff is the closest to the 'creative' 'fun' type of basic eventide effects :)

loophead: I have a huge respect for you and others who have developed the best effects processor line in the world. "The hardware sounds better" is a huge understatement :). If there was anything (either in hardware or software) that sounded as good as any of the algorithms in H8000, that would be a great achievement. Too bad that Eventide probably won't have an equivalent software based solution in my life time, so I'll have to save up for an H8000FW.
