Well... I forgot to hide this awful sounding 25€ thing when I took the picture...
You're not alone, I use headphones exclusively. Monitors always get pushed back for something cooler :). Maybe some day!

other then having to be careful with headphone monitor levels theres nothing wrong with using headphones for music mixing.
They are much easier to use in a normal home environment.
-Cost means nothing for headphones. I always preferred my $8 Sony's over my far-more-expensive thingies for accurate monitoring. (no hype at the frequency extremes unlike so many other headsets)
In fact the headphones I use are quite silly looking and I have a collection of about a dozen different types.
we all has our opinions of course...
I'm not a spy but I'm an old audio engineer and the first thing I look for in a studio is the type of monitoring because everything else is secondary.

Hi all

Its been a while, and studio's change. Heres my BIG MESS!

Heres a closeup of the EML 200

and a closeup of my secret weapon..its a small ambient generator my wife got at a dollar store. the ocean is not that great, but the rest are cool.

I also have my percussion area which is a Yamaha RX11 and a Trtigger Finger( which I use as an alternate controller and not too much for drums)

But heres my Guitars as well. The nice Les Paul red one was made by my friend from scratch and is quite nice. Notice the Atari logo and Tolkien TC on there :-) Theres also a peavy T-60, a fender music master bass, an unknown guitar with whammy bar and a casio midi guitar.

However sometime I want/need to complettly empty the room and start over again. But this is where I spend my camel and Algo day :-)

I use a couple of speaker stands (not sure what they are made of but they are heavy fookers),
You can kind of see them in the pic below..(Click on image to see full size).. I was wondering would these do any good for sound isolation as opposed to just putting them on the desk?, I would imagine so but just wanted a second or third or ten millionth opinion... :)

so..any of you ever heard of an EML 200?

Image

It was mostly used in schools as a teaching aid. I got it from a place called EMSA, back in 1977. I used to have an EML500, and sold it to get the 200 becuase I wanted something different. It also came with another unit called the EML300 which was a matrix keybaord..4x4 small pads/buttons with tuning knobs for each pad..it was very cool..but thru the years, it broke down, gave it to a freind, and never saw it again :-) But..the modern equivalant is the Trigger Finger and other 4x4 pad controllers.

Anyway, the 200 gives me raw types of modulation sounds. It has some weird modules like an electronic switch, and a wave shapper which is basically an ENV, Triggers, Sample hold, Ring Modulator and AM modulator all at once. There are no resonant filters, just stright Low and High passs filters with one knob for freq :-) There is also the master Osc which has a huge range, and can output square, triange and saw at the same time. Today I just love patching it up and doing crazy mod stuff..puting it thru VST filters and delays and anything else. I also created a VAZ MODULAR model of it, for those who have VAZ. Not quite the same, but close, and midi trigerable. This one( above) I use as a real time bubble maker. I think if I get a gig, I'll bring it along for fun live tweaking :-)

Yeah, Tim. Some guy brought one to a musicians' swap meet we have every year over at the St. Paul armory.

I would have picked it up, but the work needing to be done to it added to the price the guy was asking was crazy
