I'm not great at improvising on the keyboard, but I often have melodic ideas that I can sing more readily than play them. However, my voice doesn't sound that great and I was wondering if there is a way I could distort it so it sounds like a lead synth or so.

you might be interested in the plug ins from fretted synths.
http://www.asseca.com/frettedsynth/ats.htm u should try string sculptor and tripp lead, they make synth sounds outta input, designed for guitar i think, but it works on vocals aswell, and if you're not using a live program u can do it with recordings. (eg just like you'd add reverb to a track or something)
and theyre free!
