Ok I use trackers for drusm because it allows me to trigger random samples in a pool. Yes I know Battery can do this but I cant afford it.

Anyway the above works great for multi layer sample packs. But what if I find a great kit but only has a single layer for each sound?

Apart from changes to volume and pitch, what else can I do to make slight variations to the way a sample sounds?

I'm talking drums and percussion instruments here to make it sound more real. I know any other type of sample I can mangle the carp out of using effects.

You can filter out the highs for a softer sound, or use EQ to push up the highs for a brighter, more aggressive sound. A bit of distortion or compression limiting can also add punch to the sound.
