wineasio XT2 and me: my findings experiements and thoughts

well George Reales of discoDSP fame read the post and asked if i could test the discoDSP plugs I did just that and guess what .....they work very well...and of course pics or shut the... well, you know









This is the phantom demo...loaded up into Crossover using the trial .exe from the discoDSP website. theinstaller went smoothly and the demo worked just as it should....random swooshes n' all!


(although a note on the installer was there was an error loading the readme pdf at the end of install...but in the zip from the website there was no pdf? but anyway...this repeated itself in my tests in regular wine too...)











This is a pic with discovery v2 playing back a quick blurb on my keyboard. playback is smooth, and i played with some of the params of the midi track. jack transport also pictured. Oh yeah, this is not even on crossover pro, this is regular plain vanilla WINE.....

so so far so good george as far as the demos go, smooth sailing, i encountered no problems using wineasio

when I tried XT 1.4 under wine, I found that tweaking the [Layout] section in energyXT.ini made the difference between unusably slow to pretty smooth. Most important was the setting gui=GDI. If you want to give it a try also, here are the relevant parts of my ini:

Keep in mind that this wineasio is rooted in Suse 10.2, and there is a distro for musicians, based on 10.2 that can be installed, a 1.3 gig iso download from
www.jacklab.net ...comes with a realtime kernel too...same concept as ubuntu studio, so don't give up...

don't forget Highlife, their free sampler/host...loads lots of vst things with just the old fst or dssi-vsthost,
not to mention mention futzing about with sample collections...

ooh thanks for this! beta is still a little "beta" and this trick might be worth a shot. if its pretty smooth with wine, it should be great in crossOver !


i will try it on both and see if there is a difference between the two.

which distro are you using? also, what desktop environment?


(it kind of looks like xfce to me, which i recently just switched to for less resource consumption...it's been a pain getting xfce/thunar and cxoffice to play nice together, but worth it)



actually it was probably learning the differences between thunar and nautilus that was the culprit

well i don't think it's he "window manager" per se, i don't use the xfce manager (i use beryl with it, they were made to be together )

well i just tried editing the ini myself, and low and behold! I have that error too! so scratch that, it must be something in the the xfce water....hopefully Sanne can chime in and tell us what She's using and we can go from there...



edit (some more thoughts):

now when you say you tweaked the layout section in XT 1.4 Sanne, was there a [layout] section already there? i had to add the complete section, and i think that may have something to do with the errors...

For the record, I'm no "he".

I'm sad to hear my tips don't work for most people. Unfortunately, I don't think I can shed much more light on this issue. All I can say is what I use, so here goes (a bit longish, sorry...):

I don't use any Compiz/Beryl/$desktop-bling package, just a plain KDE with Kwin window manager. My KDE version is 3.5.2 on Kubuntu Dapper, the wine version I tried XT 1.4 with is 0.9.17, my graphics card is a GeForce 7600 GT with the proprietary Nvidia driver 1.0-8762 provided by my distro.

I didn't use the standalone XT 1.4 but used apps like savihost or audiomulch and load XT inside those as a vst, because at that time there was no wineasio. Might be worth a try for any of you, but I doubt that's the reason for the error.

If I remember correctly, I had the same ini settings on my old pc with Xubuntu Breezy (with XFCE desktop) and an older Nvidia graphics card, where it also worked much better than the default settings.

I can't remember, but I doubt that adding it manually is the reason for the error. Your terminal output suggests that it may have something to do with graphics, as "bitblt" and "X11DRV_ClientSideDIBCopy" suggests such a connection, hence I suspect the GDI setting might be the problem.

So, what I would do is, try turning off any 3D desktop temporarily and see if the error persists. I would also try to add those ini lines one by one to determine which of them is the reson for the error.

I'm sorry that I don't seem to be able to help more. If any of you want me to test something or need other system specs, just tell me, and I'll try my best to provide the info.

Guckli seems to be happy with my ini settings, maybe he/she can also help those others who are less lucky?

thanks for your detailed input i have been weening from going KDE because of past experiences....(was gonna wait for KDE4 to stable up and maybe try it again) but i can just add that desktop environment and see what happens if need be...

This is great. I tried it last night and it works great on my ubuntustudio. Question with this setup, how do you trigger the VSTs? Are you using an external keyboard controller? Can't figure out in my set up.

No problem, forgiven already.

I also don't really think the desktops are the problem. Mostly it's just about a specific wine version, what works in one might not work in another. Or it can depend on which windows dlls you have set to builtin (provided by wine, default) or to native (copied over from some windows install to your fake c drive and set up to native in winecfg).

You can also test with the wine desktop settings in winecfg: some apps work better if wine is allowed to manage the desktop, some don't.

In any case, I hope all of this will be unnecessary soon when we have XT2 ready and enough linux synths and fx to satisfy creativity. Heck, all those multitudes of windows vsts are too distracting anyway... sometimes less is more.
