wineasio XT2 and me: my findings experiements and thoughts

In any case, I hope all of this will be unnecessary soon when we have XT2 ready and enough linux synths and fx to satisfy creativity. Heck, all those multitudes of windows vsts are too distracting anyway... sometimes less is more.

i think you are spot on with the wine thing....someone said there is a fix for what the terminal tells me, coming up in a newer version...

oh well, back to XT2 for me now... and im cool with that!

This is great. I tried it last night and it works great on my ubuntustudio. Question with this setup, how do you trigger the VSTs? Are you using an external keyboard controller? Can't figure out in my set up.

make sure in your winecfg that the ONLY audio driver active is the "alsa" driver. then in xt2 settings, you should see your midi controller in the midi inputs section of setup. enable your controller and BAM! i cant believe its not windows



can you use your midi controller with other linux apps? if you havent gotten it to work lemme know and i can help you set it up.


whats so cool is with XT2, i dont even NEED jack.(unless routing output of wineasio to other apps, of course ) it works as is, and really good too

It's Xubuntu.... you think the WM could be of influence?

Tried the jacklab version, the Ubuntu one, plain vanilla from winehq... tried 4 different window managers, a bunch of winecfg options (surprised to find I had sound without driver selected), tried loading just the dll inside xt2 - the GDI option invariable makes it crash, and without it it runs unbearably slow

But - somehow xt2 does run pretty smooth under WINE, so if it ever gets the ability to import 1.x projects, that's good enough for me

It worked! I set wine to "alsa", went to energyxt2 and was able to use my controller. I am a happy camper!

I will start installing some Win VST this weekend, can't wait. Thanks again AllenPOPO!

im glad, and just in time for a new beta (june-1-07: midi mapping! ) if you get vst's that install and work that i haven't mentioned, please feel free to post your findings here. Im thinking of starting a blog on this very phenomenon, if only to help me keep track of what works and what doesn't.

i got crashes with latest wine 0.9.38 and june-1-07 ext2 version and it showed that gdiplus.dll was the prob so i downloaded this dll copied the dll to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and crashes are gone.

glad that it works smoothly, i need to get synth1 in my setup, have heard so much about that synth but have never had the time to try it.....maybe a good idea today


yeah i cant wait until [linux] native XT2 is up to par, i cant even browse my samples with my read/write enabled ntfs partition. if its read only it works though....hope that gets fixed in linux native (obviously it's working with win version)

its really kinda scary how well it works, so i hope as the app matures it keeps it's same smoothness with wine. native linux XT2 and wine'd XT2 make for a pretty potent pair of tools for linux audio.

yep, ext2 eats alot cpu under wine, freezing tracks helps a bit. i own a amd64 with 2200Mhz and chords.xt demosong eats 38% of cputime.

yeah that IS the caveat, im afraid but tbh, xt2 has graphical issues EVEN when i use it in my XP partition so hopefully, when jorgen gets to that issue, which i imagine should be soon, things may get better, also equating that wine gets better over time as well. but of course it will never be 1:1. I personally use a p4 3ghz hyperthreaded with 1 gig of ram. this box only upgrades to 2 gigs, but, i think that will be good enough so hopefully i can make that upgrade soon. until then, i render, save carefully, save .xtc clips and i deal with beta since i can write to my ntfs partitions now, i can always "move" a project to the ntfs side and boot into windows. i have now successfully install 98% of my commercial plugs, and tons of freebies, so as long as the save file itself doesnt get corrupted to crap, it should open seamlessly in windows for final tweaks and intensive editing

my main desire is to come up with musical "ideas" easily from within my linux environment, sonmething i am able to achieve for now




but yeah, 512 ram may just be a little TOO few mb's to compensate for the extra wine layer. for curiosity's sake, can you post your jack configuration? and can you say something more on performance of when using jack and NOT using jack?


for example, i whenever i wanna use kontakt 2 i use jack to control the audio etc, because the settings can be tweaked. midi is much better on the bigger instruments this way. experimenting is unfortunately the only way to know sometimes how to get things o work opimally.



if you know about jack libaam with linux version maybe you can try to use XT2 exe to be a comp-only vsthost, and use the midiout plug to control them from the native linux XT2. not sure if this will be better performance wise or not, but its worth a shot
