hi all! just a curiosity...i have a Presonus Blue Tube DP - i like it, but it is quite noisy...i picked up one at the shop, and took it back because it was too noisy - they gave me another one which is less noisy, but still i find the ground noise a bit nasty...any similar experience? i mean, do i have to surrender and spend three times its price or more for a "real" preamp, or i was just unlucky with the one (actually, two) i picked up??

cheers,
Goyya :)

I tried one of those presonus ones for a few days, very noisy as you say. Sorry to break the news but all those cheap pre-amps are all going to have that problem. You can probably find a used (Groove Tubes) "Brick" for $250-$300 if you look. It's the best affordable tube-pre available. You can look at the Joe Meek 3Q ($200 I think) if you want to try a decent budget pre-amp, but it's not a tube pre.

Good Luck

I must have lucked out. I had a Blue Tube DP and didn't find it to be noisy.

I just got a used Presonus Eureka for $300. Class A. They are normally $500-$600 new, but the guy I bought it from is a guitar teacher/producer by the name of Rob Bourassa (http://www.bourassaguitarstudio.com/gui ... ontact.htm) .

One of his very wealthy students/artists he's recording an album for bought him an Avalon 737 ($2,200) just to record/mix his record and said he could keep it. Since this was gathering dust in the Avalon's shadows he unloaded it to me for cheap. It's every bit good as the $1,000+ preamps but a little noisier when cranked. He says he liked this one a lot and was real easy to mix with, and says the Avalon almost gives a too upfront sound in the mix compared to the Eureka.

Spend the extra $200 for this (Musician's Friend has them for $500 right now). You wont be disappointed. It's the best $500 you can spend on a preamp of this caliber without going into the pricier preamps in the $1000+ range.

I think there are a few other people here on KVR that have them. Killvehicle mentioned he has one, in another thread.
