Well I'm thinking about jumping on the independent developer bandwagon and releasing a commerical vst, a drum sampler. But atm i'm using Delphi 6 Personal Edition. Is there a cheap way to upgrade to a commerical version of delphi? I've been looking on ebay, not often, but haven't seen any version 6 editions come up. Should I avoid any of the newer versions? I read somewhere that somebody found all odd releases buggy, or it may have been he found all even releases buggy. I can't remember.

For me, all even releases were buggy to a certain point. I had Delphi 3, 5, 7. But then I have Turbo Delphi now (basically Delphi 10) and I love it. It's the best deal because you can have it as Delphi Win32 without all the .NET stuff.
The alternative is Lazarus, which is getting better and better. The advantage is that the compiler is available for a dozen of platforms. However it is unfortunately not yet very stable. Until some days something was broken in the compiler, so that it was impossible to compile DLLs. All DLLs got corrupt :-/

I think I've asked about this in the past in another thread, but I can't remember exactly. Anyway, I'm currently using Delphi 7 personal edition (awesome) with the Castalia 5 IDE upgrade (really awesome), but I've been thinking of buying Turbo Delphi for a few months now. I've just spotted the professional edition available in Borland's Nordic online store for 219 EUR (excluding VAT and shipping).

First of all, would you recommend Turbo Delphi as a good platform for developing VSTs? I'm assume so if this is what you are using to develop your own plugs. But are there any weird quirks you've encountered with the VST2.3/2.4 SDK's, or have you encountered any major incompatibilities with any packages/libs you are using? Are there any serious limitations that bother you, compared to the full Delphi products?

Second of all, may I ask where you bought your copy from and how much you paid? I've been looking around for a while now and the prices seem to vary quite dramatically sometimes. Is there a nice secret shop somewhere with really good deals? 219 EUR seems pretty good though so I will probably just go for it.

I bought mine about a week after it came out. The price was around 300€ (a bit higher including VAT).
During the first month it was pretty much unusable. The memory wasn't freed for some tasks and you had to restart the IDE evey 10 minutes! Also the commandline compiler was missing (so no JCL/JVCL at the beginning).
Since October last year most issues are fixed and with the latest january update, the IDE is quite stable (there are still some projects who seem to eat memory and I have no idea, but those are not VST plugins). I beleieve that the root of all evil for Turbo Delhpi is, that the IDE itself is based on .NET. You'll face several known issues of .NET here. Nothing dramatic, but anoiing (the 'minimize' sometimes do not minimizes all windows for example).

At least my Delphi ASIO/VST packages work flawlessly in Turbo Delphi. I can't say anything about the VST2.3/2.4 SDKs though, but I see no problem here.

Although it is right now my goto IDE, I'm already looking for lazarus. I'm right now working 20% in Lazarus and 80% Delphi. As soon as all the issues in Lazarus are fixed, I will switch instantaniously, since the Delphi compiler is pretty much limited to one platform. If everything goes well this will happen in one or two years I think.

Heh, been a Delphimaniac since the Egghead opened its doors early on Delphi 1.0 release day, and Turbo Pascal since version 2.0. Hadn't heard about Turbo Delphi, I tend not to keep up with software when I can't afford to keep upgrading to the latest. :-D

Right now I'm using Delphi 7 Architect. You don't want to know how much I paid. =@.@= (Earned it back many many times over, of course.) I don't use it for music but specialized medical, dental, and forensic apps.

There are free version of the Turbo Delphis availible. And you are free to use them to make comercial apps if you so choose, unlike with Delphi 6 PE.

So you can try before buy if you want to.

The only limitation with the free turbos is that you can not install 3rd part components. You can still use 3rd party source code, you just cant install packages and have them all nicely integrated into the IDE.

So you make them flashy apps like they use in CSI that can create an image of someones face from the arse print they left on a seat?

Though my degrees are in Electronics Engineering and Thaumatecture, I'm forced by government regulations to confine my professional efforts to the mundane and natural. The world's not ready for the level of magic and/or charlatanry displayed in CSI.

now why can't my photoshop take the image of some guy 100ft away and blow up his face in extreme detail to the size of a basketball? does that cost extra?

You have to set your computer up to go "bip bip bip" as you type (and as it displays text a character at a time in slow motion, in a huge font). There are other adjustments to make. To do it all at once go into Windows Control Panel, then Themes, then pick "Hollywood" and Bob's your uncle.

dll problems are resolved. Vst's are the only thing I make at the moment.

I'd like to check out Turbo Delphi but the download is a bit too big. I'll have to wait until i get the net connected at home.
