Unfortunately, I have Ableton Live 6! which doesn't support the REX format. Any other ideas for quality beats, commercial?

You can load a VSTi Rex player into Live. Go to http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php and search for .rx2 and/or .rex format and you'll find several choices, including some inexpensive ones.

And in simple terms, do these plugins convert the .rex file into AIFF, WAV or MP3 (Ableton compatable) format?

No, they just play them. Maybe better to avoid something dependent on another plugin. There used to be a free .rex player (called Phatmatik, and distinct from Phatmatik Pro) but its not available any more, Im afraid.

I'd say stick to .wav loops.

Thanks for the sage advice.

Where is that rabbit hole?

If you get Dimension Pro, you'll get a nice library (but look at the link to see if it's stuff you want/need) and a Rex player as a bonus.
