I know reverb helps but when you listen to this stuff it sounds as if it's kind of in the distance, I know velocity/panning also helps but it doesn't give me that authentic sound.

Knowing how to orchestrate helps. - Knowing the characteristics of the instruments is important. - Writing as if you were writing for a real orchestra will make the piece seem more realistic. Layering can also help, particularly with brass instruments (which I find are hardest to get to sound real).
Unfamiliar words can be looked up in my Glossary of musical terms.

Yeah, the right samples help..also THE RIGHT kinds of reverb treatments and setups help too eg....True Stereo/..Surround reverb (if you are working in surround that is), lots of Early Reflections, but not so much of the reverb tail for a clean film score sound or for a concert feel add more of the longer tail to taste. Then theres EQing the reverb returns to scoop out the resonances and what not to mold and clean up the sound.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Good stuff, KingofBeers.
I'd love to know if we're dealing with an 8M soundfont or something larger...

I forgot to mention that as you are creating your virtual space ..use different delay times for different instruments...Strings being the shortest..Percussion the longest etc.

That too!bduffy wrote:Delay times? Pre-delay times on the reverb, you mean?
But yeah, the samples help to.
Creating a realistic Orchestra is an art form in itself, using samples and psychoacoustics is only part of it(most if concert emulating

As realistic is going to be impossible if your a perfectionist maybe expressive and musical would also be a good measure.

Nice tips will come in handy for sure.
I am using the samples you get with Reason. I'll have to check out this PSP stuff, it seems quite popular, although I'm getting a bit fed up with software, I need something to acutally put my hands on I think!
