hi,
oddly enough ext1 fluctuates between 31 and 42 on my p3 933 and on the amd 3800x2 it's 00 - 01 (xt2 is actually 02 - 03)

that's all strange - on my machine (XP2600+) it uses in both Linux and Windows almost nothing... :?

Post

This could well be the asio driver .
I had a machine where for example asio4all used roughly five times the cpu idling than the native asio driver (10% as compared to 2%), almost unusable.
The card itself was a bit of hassle in general though, so I went for a different one.

This might be totally different for other systems, in any case worth a try if you have alternatives at hand.

yep, its asio4all on the p3 so maybe that a reasonable explaination

well mine is asio4all too with internal soundcard (soundmax).....but asio4all is widely used and never gave me any problem before

i wouldnt be surprised if its some denormal loopin crap specific to old p4s and centrinos.....

its 7-12% on my amd xp2200

but speaking of denormals, i have tunes that use 60% when stoped & 40% when playing :o

Sounds like it could be a special case where ext's asio implementation wouldn't go too well with asio4all, especially if it works in other hosts.
In fact, it's the only explanantion I can think of right now.

Post

no asio4all here...

Post

It's probably a mixture of two or more similar issues in this thread  People reporting problems with comparable symptoms ...

The asio driver is a very likely source to give troubles as it takes the higher priority in processing, so if there's an issue with the drivers (or the driver-interfacing) you almost certainly get into performance issues, more likely than with anything else.
A second possible issue here could have come from the graphic driver's side.
A combination of driver not playing well with xt's gui implementation. AFAI can tell, xt draws all its widgets itself, so it is not unlikely that this can also become a problem. And xt has a very "vivid" gui (in lack for a better word to explain the high number of widgets).

amd xp2200 dont has denormal isssues....so we can rule that one out.
7-12% idle on xp2200 is pretty bad.....what sound card/driver? (although i'm pretty sure its just a xt2 issue)

Post

nah, the Subz has got an Emu card afaik so he doesn't count... :hihi:

Post

Emu 1820 it is ;)

& a RME Digi96

& a ONYX Satellite

& ASIO for all linked to my 4 stereo WDM outputs on my E-MU

& all 4 of them patch straight in to my E-MU's patchmix interface & work well all at he same time,

just for fun i had the RME buffer at 96 in XT1 with my mike being sent to it via patchmix, run the mike through GSnap back to my patchmix then from patchmix in to tracktion & recorded it (at a buffer of 512)

all quite pointless but good geeky fun,

:P

Post

subz, you use asio4all instead of the stock emu drivers ?

Post

so sweetheart then please do tell whether it makes any difference cpu-wise what audio-interface you use!
