Hey guys, I just have a question about how well my new sound card should be working in cubase 3sx.
In device settings, Im getting a latency of over 6. Is that normal? Shouldn't it be lower? I read through all the instructions, but I feel as though i didn't set up the audio card in cubase properly? Any pointers?
Thanks.

6 as in ms?? If so that aint bad at all, if you have a newer and bigger (faster) proc youll squeeze more out of it, get maybe 3-4ms. But if youve got a midrange sys, thats about what youd get. Try to record a midi track and record an audio track w/ it, play it back with your midi, if you get a slight flange that good, if you get a full on doublignof beats, that aint so good.
Why cry about your own desires, when I could have them and leave you standing in the sadness of your own....

If it feels good, then leave it at that setting. If you feel there's a lag, then lower the latency setting. If you hear audio clicks/jitters, increase the latency.

keep in mind that a hardware instrument also has a latency of around 10ms, so: anything under 10 is good enough

At at sample rate of 192khz its 1.3 miliseconds, and it crackles a little bit. At 96khz its 2.6 milliseconds. At 44khz it 5.3 milliseconds. And Im only on windows XP and tracktion. I suppose on vista it would probably be able to do 1.3 milliseconds whithout crackle. There must be a limit cause there will always be processing time.

As I understand it, no human being (in a blind test) can percieve less than 30ms.
Cranking it to the lowest value just adds stress to your system and lowers how much it can do.
If you can push it up to 10-20ms and not tell the differece, DO IT. Your system will perform better, crash less and you'll get more done.

Nonsense. A 30ms delay is very perceivable and causes lots of problems if performing live.timobrien wrote:As I understand it, no human being (in a blind test) can percieve less than 30ms.

Are those 6ms the number for the overall value?
