UAD PCI card to PCMCIA

Close, but no, thats a desktop solution, and we're looking for a notebook/lappie solution. PCMCIA to PCI/e or ExpressCard to PCI/e. I know Asus has its PCIe gamecard expansion set to drop soon, its supposed to be under $300, but I don't know if its limited only to video cards, other than the box ports (no 1/4", 1/8" openings, tho possibly a SPDIF port).
Why cry about your own desires, when I could have them and leave you standing in the sadness of your own....

Ok, selling my UAD PCI in order to buy an external UAD it doesn't make much sense to me, DOES it???? Selling the original card to get a new one in a box!!! Sh_t! It's a solution though...
Anyway, inf0tr8r who wrote "get a fasttrack pro" (even though it's irrelevant to this post) gave me and idea... which isn't actually solving any problems but it's a way to make use of the UAD card and the laptop. Buying a new soundcard for the laptop gives you the opportunity to connect your desktop and your laptop via the midi I/O of the 2 soundcards. That way you could work at the same project in both systems using the UAD card and the power of desktop and laptop conbined.
This, of course, doesn't solve anything ... and I really would like to use the SpaceEcho plugin while playing live.... but it seems more likely to get busy trying to make this adaptop myself rather than buying the adaptor from Magma.

I've been utilising my PC in this way (as that is where my UAD card is).
It's not a very good solution. Wormhole is flaky to send multiple channels over ethernet, using a real audio card is limited to the number of I/O channels you have, and having to VNC (or a second monitor) to get to the controls, no recall etc etc - it's just an ugly way to work.
If it works for you, then fine, but I'm looking for a better solution - the only one of which seems to be to bite the bullet, buy an Xpander when it's released (it's late already) which looks to be around £650(!), keep my existing UAD licenses and sell my existing UAD-1 card as a Project Pak/DSP expansion for, I dunno what the going rate is for these - maybe £200? - to offset the cost a little.
More money, but it should be a kickass system... I'm not sure I can permanently live without the UAD plugs...

I didn't know that this kind of connection limits to I/O channels... why is that? and why use ethernet? I've seen two friends jamming in the same project using 2 laptops connected ONLY via the midi I/O of their soundcards using Ableton Live and it worked perfectly! Yet, I don't think that you can do the same using Cubase, I think you must use the SPDIF route instead.

Beej was talking about routing analog audio from one PC to the other: line out -> line in. Can do that with only as many audio channels as you have inputs & outputs on both PC's. No loss of quality due to DA + AD conversion, no problem with multiple channels: only limited by the practical bandwidth. But you get added latency and the connection can be unstable in Beej's experience.deadmichaelp wrote:and why use ethernet?

Well, spdif is an option indeed, smart thinking! Or if you require more than just a stereo pair you could use ADAT lightpipe with eight channels.deadmichaelp wrote:I think you must use the SPDIF route instead.

Using FX Teleport let's you use your UAD card (and all other vst/vsti's) via ethernet from the desktop PC.
It works perfect for me but i still need the big desktop monster to do it.
A solution could be using af small desktop PC as PCI expander that way if it's the size that matters
