+1 HGFortune as well.... I don't use his stuff mostly because I'm a hardcore fan of traditional Oscs (Square/Saw/Tri type traditional) but I love his synths and would use them if I didn't have that constraint.

What I do use, and Love is UGO's Texture Also Motion is brilliant. Neither are truly "Evolving" in that they are not auto-automated but you can hold down a note for bars and bars and do manual automation on the fly or record automation into your sequencer/tracker and have all sorts of loveliness.

I also have to say +1 Absynth.... I worked with 3 and loved it.

Finally the one thing that I do keep in my arsenal that does break the rules is Anna from last years KVR-Devoloper Challenge.

Try Atomic Cloud, it's excellent and only $10 (not VST though):

+1 for anna, it's a really cool synth... i'm not sure if it's right for the really long stuff, but i wouldn't put it past it as the mod options are REALLY sweet.

another freebie vsti not mentioned yet i think is augur from (anti?) smart electronix. that would be right up your alley.

Just run any old audio file through Paulstretch.
