I recently got the program digital ear that can convert singing or anything into MIDI notes, I find this incrdible and im mad I didnt know about it sooner, how long has this type of software been around...
I know I had heard of a MIDI guitar awhile ago, but I never heard of anything that could turn singing into MIDI notes that could be played back on other VSTi's

The Korg MS-20 (1978) had a crude frequency-to-voltage converter for pitch tracking
But it had been around for a while probably, and Roland even made a cool device with it:

I used to demo the voicetracker at namm shows and wrote an review on it in EM in '85.
at that time there was also the pitchrider by IVL.
those are strictly mononote input so they cant track a chord or a harmony.
I still do transciptions and scoring by ear, its faster and more reliable.

I've been at this for a few years, as it was the holy grail for a fast workflow for me. There are a lot of programs that do it. None of them work well for me singing my synths, but i'm glad ur having success. Melodyne works the best to me, but you still need heavy editing in the piano roll sometimes, and you lose most of the expressivity as every vsti responds different. I've found ur better off using one of those programs to give you the notes you sung and playing them by hand. But that takes so much longer. It was a nice dream. Here is a thread on mine and others experiences with the different apps

Interesting... I actually started a thread about this the other day:

I admit that I'm looking for real-time control and performance (as opposed to offline transcription), but my experiences are quite disappointing so far, ymmv... for the time being I'm going with FrettedSynth's audio-controlled synths

The mind boggles.

funny that you should say that, cause I was meaning to recommend those and couldnt remember if i did in the earlier threads. I think they track very well, better than most. Only problem is because it is not a midi conversion ur stuck with subtractive synth sounds. But very unique and well executed plugs...and free!....much respect to fretted synth.Juanjo wrote:Interesting... I actually started a thread about this the other day:

Well his tracking is by far the best and most responsive that I've found so far, at least for voice... his synths are quite good and he also has PhazOsc which is phase distortion... and as mentioned in the other thread there MIGHT be an audio-controlled sampler from him in the future, which should expand the sonic palette quite a bit...bermudagold wrote:funny that you should say that, cause I was meaning to recommend those and couldnt remember if i did in the earlier threads. Also OT on hardware- I found a reference to the Synthi 100 on EMS' site. That had a pitch to voltage unit which was also made seperate; this in '71. i think Steve Hillage used it for guitar.BertKoor wrote:The Korg MS-20 (1978) had a crude frequency-to-voltage converter for pitch tracking ;-)

I remember trying a playing around with a unit in a music store around 1986, but I can't remember what it was called. It wasn't by a well known company, I don't think. It was a single rack, with a mic and line input and midi out. Worked pretty well, I guess.
Anyone remember what that might have been?
