I think they compliment each other. Sonalksis for warmth and NoName for cleaner work.bmanic wrote:This EQ is awesome! It's simple interface is a huge boon. I really like it and like many of you here it'll be NonameEQ and IIEQ for all my general mixing EQ tasks from now on (sonalksis EQ sometimes too but it really does not compare very well to these simple freeware offerings imho. Shows how talented developers there are around KvR!).
Cheers!

I don't know.. maybe it's just me but I haven't really found any use for the sonalksis EQ lately. I always get superior results replacing it with something else, usually IIEQ or Voxengo HarmoniEQ (in PhaseyP mode to minimize CPU usage) and now NonameEQ. Sonalksis EQ is unfortunately rather harsh when it comes to boosting the top end of anything and it's different bands are not full range parametric which makes it a bit tedious to use sometimes.
.. all this is purely my own humble opinion of course!

Yeah, I can agree with that. As much as I like the SV-317, I recall once where I used it across a whole project, and when my brother heard it, said it was a good mix, but there was something "grumbling" in the upper mids; when I replaced the SV-317 with replicated settings on another EQ, the grumbling went away. It was only ever on that one project, but made me wonder about those noise tests from awhile back. And, of course, there are times when you wish the frequency range wasn't limited, but it's not a thorn in my side. I do enjoy the interface, I found it easy to work with, so I think that contributes too.bmanic wrote:I don't know.. maybe it's just me but I haven't really found any use for the sonalksis EQ lately. But it is becoming apparent that you simply do not need to spend big bucks anymore to get a good software EQ.

This NonameEQ is nice and I would certainly reccomend it to anyone - nice work Christian!
on the 517:
I love the Sonalksis SV-517, and I actually like the way the bands are configured, I dont know if it's really necessary, but it helps me keep things straight when I'm EQing.
I could take another EQ where I've boosted the lows with a band on the right of the GUI and done other stuff like that and then when i open the project later I have to figure it out if I need to make an adjustment. I don't find the 517 restricting, and it helps me stay organized

I must say it has a special sound - special, but I like it a lot up to now. Let me see if it will survive some mixes, but I can imagine using it a lot. Sounding very different than others so I am not quite sure right now. Christian, why does it sound so different? Quality? Did you learn something new?

I'm continously amazed at the critique of software EQs. This one is apparently both 'transparent' and 'has a special sound'? Sonalksis is 'warm'? Then whenever tests are conducted with frequency analysis, oscilloscopes etc., they all pretty much do exactly the same thing, albeit sometimes with different curve/gain implementation and the occasional glitch in the code.
I don't mean to slam anyone or anything, but isn't a lot of this EQ talk a load of psyche?

Hi krank,
what does that prove? I think it is pretty obvious that freqency analysis and oscilloscopes are not enough to describe the phenomenon "Audio". A friend of mine is a high end audio hardware developer (Speakers and Amps), and although he has the most expensive measuring stuff under his hands he describes a lot of unexplainable phenomenons every time I meet him. And I could give you a loz more out of my long year experience, but I know these debates. They always end up in a nulling test, which again proves nothing when I hear a difference bey ears at ease.

P.S.: I would not describe the Sonalksis as warm, and by "special" I only mean that it is sounding completely different than others. And the Q knob of the Noname seems to react "with more grip" than all the others. Much easier to use.

Yeah, I think some things just "fit" better with your sound and workflow than others, and that can inform your decisions. Take Electri-Q: one of the best-sounding software EQ's out there, but the interface puts me off, so I don't bother with it, but I'm totally into his simpler, free NoNameEQ, because it's much easier to use. Does it sound better? Probably not, but it sounds good to me, especially with the low CPU. And I find mkdr's GUI fun to use, plus I dig the sound; seems to hold out really well with huge filter peaks and sounds smooth in the highs, which is a nice surprise for an inexpensive, Synthmaker-made EQ.
