time to move on [mixer / controller]

i recently damaged my Yamaha 01x and im currently looking into getting it repaired..
but.. i was outgrowing the 01x/i88x prior to it being damaged.. so my question is.. whats the next step?
I run a Nuendo based studio. Im not necissarily in love with yamaha.. although ive never had a problem with them either... but since none of the other mixers will work with the i88x.. i think its time to sell off what i can and start with a new digital mixer / control surface
at first I was thinking about the Tascam DM 3200.. but ive since been informed that the sound quality isnt optimal:
"44.1/48k max on the firewire card. It looks like you'd need an ADAT card and a hard drive recording rig to get higher sampling rate"
http://studioforums.com/eve/forums/a/tp ... 2361088881
Ive since been thinking that it might be best to avoid the all in ones and assemble the control surface, inputs, preamps, soundcard etc, from various reputable gear.
im at a bit of a crossroads.. any advice?

No other mixer works with the i88X? But, but... what about it's ADAT I/O?
I always liked modular setups: pick components that do a task really well, and can be combined in the whole setup.
Maybe you can take one step up from the 01x, would that be a 01v96 for example?

im definatly considering a modular setup.. but how do they communicate with eachother?
for example.... if i have multiple xlr preamps from one company, a midi interface from another, 1/4" inputs on another box, optical inputs, a control surface etc... do they each plug into the computer seperatly? do they all meet in a device/mixer? any latency issues [nuendo]?
Thanks for your help! ive been thinking about switching to something like this for a while.. nothing looks better than a nice rack [be it ribs/tits/audio] =)

It all connects dead-easy with analog gear, while in digital I can understand you get a all-in-one box. Multiple ADAT devices may require an expensive wordclock generator.

Oh yes it is! My gear is totally modular. But the only point where it's digital is where it's going in or out of the computer. The rest is all analog. No connection problems, no latency, no sync issues...DiLate wrote:so if im using a computer to record and play back.. than a modular setup isnt for me?
Who said "tape" ??DiLate wrote:i dont want to use tape

sorry i thought the "t" in adat meant tape i misunderstood a previous post and thought the only way to record with a modular setup is to use dat tapes.BertKoor wrote:Oh yes it is! Ah yes, there was a time where ADAT was solely the Digital Audio Tape. What's left of it, is the optical TOSLINK transfer medium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADAT_Lightpipe
That's a common connection between several digital audio devices.
My setup isn't as interesting as yours: mainly a Mackie 1604 VLZ mixer & AudioTrak Maya1010 PCI interface. No ADAT or SPDIF to be found. Each component can be replaced and everything else still works.
