Really irks me when people ask for help and never come back to say thanks.

One of the ringmodulator inputs (preferably a sine or a triangle) is a static signal, while the other input (idem) it's pitch is modulated by (preferably) a envelope. To finish this sound it is recommended to use a highpass filter after the ringmodulator, the cutoff point tweaked to slightly below the pitch of the lowest signal, to prevent that the subtracted signal becomes dominant (ring modulation = summed signal of the inputs + subtracted signal of the inputs)
cool, i'll have to dl ring modulator and play around with it sometime.

THB, use a synth with some saws. detune a few of them and put an envelope with a slow attack on the pitch of all ocillators. set the sustain to full and release to your taste. that's all you need for the basic sound.
Agreed, this is a much more easier and quicker way to make a building-up sound. But the sound I was imagining was more siren-like.
BTW: that's the whole purpose of the modulator, it modulates the pitch of the carrier.
Yup, but you can also modulate the modulator's pitch with an envelope. When played in the higher registers it gives a typical tearing siren sound.

Env ==> Mod Pitch
Env ==> Mod Amp (regular use)

Here the modulator is not a static signal because it's frequency changes (according to the Env settings)
i hadn't thought of putting an env on the pitch of modulator, i'll try that tonight and see how it sounds, i really should use fm more, it's just not what i'm used to. what fm synth are you using?

Nothing personal, runny, but your continuing insults and snide remarks to many genres are becoming rather annoying.

Take a huge detuned saws lead and hold it whilst using the pitchbend wheel... With all due respect, people; duh......

with all due respect, which isn't a whole lot at this point, this is the "sound design" forum. which part of your post was it that talks about designing a sound? or was it more like "get a patch and play it with pitchbend" ? that does him absolutely no good if he doesn't know how to make a huge detuned saws lead.

Sorry. Sheesh. Well i'm not the first person to mention that am I? But fair enough. Sorry guys.
