Perhaps we could get some "attack sounds annoying" answers so I know how to improve...

I like the fast attack the most. The medium and the slow attack seem to be somehow a bit too "chunky". In certain situations this might be wanted but there are already plenty of other plugin compressors that can do that bit.

I'll try to make some tweaked audio examples with various combinations to clarify what I mean with "chunky".

EDIT: hmm.. actually, when thinking about it a bit. Maybe the 'knee' is too hard? Try making a knee that is close to being hard but kind of starts rounding off into hard quite early on.

Compression would already occur at the point of the arrow.

I wouldn't call it exactly basic, but it does remind me a lot of the BuzzRoom compressors attack.

I thought the slow attack sounded pretty good, but kind of clipping? Is that the "chunk"?

Yes. That did remove the "chunks". However, I think partly the reason for the chunky sound in the first place is that loop of mine. It was quite heavily compressed to begin with and it does have some 'spiky' transients on the kick/snare that are hard to tame.

Perhaps we could find a better clip to try the compressor on?

is it just me or does the original sound better than the others? I also noticed that the fast knee attack is clipping

edit: ah, I maximized the clips because the output level was uneven, I think that the fast attack sounds the best after the original

this seriously reminds me of my old valley-people compressor ... which was one of my favourite compressors ...

Daniel, that compressor looks sexy and sounds awesome. I will download all the remaining clips right now.

I find a good way to test attack of a compressor is on synth lines and really detached, boring drums. The test for me, is, will it make the synth sound punchy or will it make it pop ... and will it make the drums interesting. I can prepare a few sound aamples to be processed if you like?

After checking out all clips. I definitely prefer the slow attack to have more knee. I think that attack is one of those things that is hard to nail. Your compressor's attack reminds me of Kjaerhus Gold GCO-1 which is a very clean sounding compressor.

Just a thought, but I think if you want to capture a more smooth, less poppy attack, you might want to have a look at some ideas that Aleksey used on Marquis. It seems to involve some phase shifting and a different signal detector.

Here's the clip processed by the Marquis, granted it sounds more pumpy, but I notice 2 things that it does...

- It melts the entire sound and sorta glues it together to create a more unified sound.
- The attack is less pronounced, yet the drums still cut through.
