I have a motu 828 mk2 interface and the only analog output i will be recording is my access virus kc and the occasional guitar part. I hooked up my krk rp8 monitors directly into the 1/4 out of my virus and the sound is ABSOLUTELY increadible!
Then I set it up to record through the analog 1/4s on my motu and the sound is about 1/4 as full & the panning effects and sound in general is all mid range and mushy. Im using balanced cables and keeping the recording under 15 db.
If i do a black lion upgrade will the sound be equivalent or close to playing the kc directly into my monitors?

You shouldnt be getting isssues like that on that interface. I would suspect pan law on the DAW software youre using or some settings on the card control software are causing this.

The ad/da converters of the Motu should be OK, you shouldn't hear a big difference. I suspect the MOTU's outputs aren't as loud as the Virus'. So raise the volume a bit... Also you may raise the recording volume a bit if the -15dB mark is where the peaks are now. It's an OK level for average sound, but peaks may go way higher (near -3dB)

Get an SPL meter (radio shack, $30) so you know you're listening at the same level. Then make your assesments again.
Kudos to you on targeting a proper nominal recording level. Don't worry about peaks, it's that average level that is the important one to watch. Targeting your converters 0dbu reference for that will leave more than adequate headroom for transient peaks.

You're obviously talking nonsense here. The MOTU converters are pretty good. If you make such a statement, at least give some credible arguments...jones-y wrote:MOTU converters suck. The converters on the MOTU 828 mk2 should be fine, and I trust the RMAA tests done with it. Otherwise there's something overlooked in the tests.

I had one. I now have an RME 9632. Nuff said.
