I've heard nothing but great things about the MOTU Ultralite, being the best in it's price range, etc, etc.

The time has now come and I'll be getting one of these very soon, but I just have a few questions!

1. I know MOTU has supposedly the best driver support on the Mac...but what about for Windows PCs?

I currently am using a Windows PC, and I plan to get a Mac...but probably not for another 2 years or so! When I get a Mac, I'm going with Logic Pro (hopefully LP8 will be out by then), but until them I'll be stuck with FL Studio 6 on the PC. So, I'm wondering what I should look out for on the PC side of things.

2. Firewire cards. I heard that some firewire cards don't even work with the Ultralite..and that this is especially a problem on the PC side of things. What Firewire cards are recommended and which ones to stay away from? On my PC, I have the ASUS A7N8X Motherboard, with a built in firewire (I think it's built in...but I have never used it). I would be willing to buy a firewire card if it will help!

3. Volume control. I don't plan on getting a mixer...everything I do is in software. I know there's a volume control for the headphones, but what about the analog outs for the main speakers L and R? Is there a hardware volume knob, or how would I go about controlling the volume? The last thing I want to do is buy a MOTU Ultralite and BM6A's for around $2500ish and turn it on, not be able to control my volume, and blow up the BM6As!

4. Thanks in advance! --Nev

I've been using an 828mkII (same guts and drivers as Ultralite) on my XP laptop for a year with ZERO problems. Motu-bad-on-PC is an old myth.

Motu DOES demand you use a TexasInstruments or Lucent firewire chipset. (says so right on their website) This is not a big deal, you can easily and cheaply get a TI or Lucent chipset card - or if your getting a laptop get a PCMCIA card or make sure the built-in is TI/Lucent-- like I did before I bought my laptop.

There's a volume knob right on the front (take a good look at the photo http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite/ ) - that is a 2function knob that controls
BOTH headphone and main out levels or you can use the volume know in your sequencer or the CueMix control panel that the Motu drivers install. Cuemix is a virtual 4-bus mixer.

Ahhh, for some reason I assumed that volume knob only worked for the headphones, since it was right next to that port.

Question about that, though. When headphones are plugged in, does the sound come out of the speakers and headphones at the same time?

Or can I have both headphones and speakers plugged in and only listen to headphones only, or speakers only (without a mixer)?

Cuemix lets you pick what output is used.

You can also pick the output in your sequencer software.

It's really very easy:
