I'm working on a disco/funk project now and it just screams for a Bootsy/Flashlight style bassline and I have know idea as to where to begin to create one.
Thanks folks.

Not much help but: Drag out the old vinyl and have a ball! Be sure beforehand to put away any breakable items that might get bumped onto the floor, 'cos when Bootsy gets going some booty is sure to get shaking.

Yeah thats what I need. But I dont even know a "thought process" as to where to begin to devise a bassline like him. Is there like a certain scale or theory he generally adheres to?

I'm a naive listener, an admirer of the sound (though sadly I didn't when it was current; stupid, hm?) but my music theory days are a third of a century in the past; it was all geared toward classical, baroque, and the like; and... well, I wasn't much good at it even then. I'll be as interested as you in hearing what Those Who Know These Things have to say, though. Dunno how much will stick in my head but it can't hurt. :-}

Listening to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones live material, I find that Victor L. Wooten sometimes channels Bootsy.

Whoa! Another Flecktones enthusiast? Here I thought I was the only one twisted enough to like future bluegrass. Interesting insight there, hadn't occurred to me.

long time ago (80s ?) there was a british tv series called "Rock School" where they gave tips on playing different styles of music. bootsy featured in the funk episode. (also nile rodgers as i recall) it might be on you-tube.

play the blues scale and some octave notes.

slide into and out of notes.

If on a midi keyboard, keep the left hand on the pitch wheel. Go thru and play a basic pattern with 1/4 notes in sync w/BD. Go thru again (overdub) and play inbetween 1/8 notes (not every one) an octave up w/mod wheel. Try that approach - you may develope the feel. If not, you are hopelessly white.

Peace: bubba
