Yep, Greg, so far when you want something done, we have the right tools for that, and unfortunately they're only "Windows certified" for now. Thanks to MS, I guess, but somehow I think and feel that'll change, slowly but it will change.

It is actually a very healthy and secure symbiosis this "a few *right* tools" on Windows and Internet, word processing etc. on Linux, because Windows works much better when there are just a few apps installed, and Linux is just fabulous for internet. This way we can also get used to Linux as an OS in general, so it'll be easier to switch completely when the time comes.

As for the services on W2k and WXP... well you have to really know them to disable them, it's tricky and depends heavily upon what you do on that particular comp, but if you only do music, you can safely disable heaps of them. On my "MusicXP" :D, I have only 12 services running, 36 disabled and 20 on "manual" and I'm still using Internet on it just to visit KVR and Reaper forums which is definitely safe [ I have a router so it's very easy to connect, just plug the net card in and there ]. In general, I know which ones a 100% safe to disable, so I always do that on my client's computers. It really makes the comp more stable, even though the most important thing for stability are drivers. To make Windows really stable you usually have to experiment a lot, and by "stable" I mean a computer that works and works for weeks without a hiccup in a pro-environment. the important thing is - it's doable. Thank god :D. But every tiny thing from your choice of MBO, RAM, PSU VGA, CPU and the list goes on, is crucial because of the drivers, so over the time I've learned which drivers Windows likey and which driver Windows not-likey to make it all really stable :D. Well it's my job after all.

And after all this, who needs Vista? New problems, new bugs, old story, everything all over again and you have to pay for that?!. Once you make yourself a stable system just leave it this way. For somebody, installing Vista is just a game, but for me - I see a zillion problems which cannot be solved overnight, rather "overyears" if not decades, after all it's a MS system... you just ask yourself - do I really need that/it [problems/Vista]? I mean it's only a brand new same old package which *can* make a big difference between crashes every few days or every few weeks. It depends on "where do you want to go today?"; to a "blue-screen land", or just work on your projects?

People in general think about OS too much, as if OS can do stuff for you. AFAIK no OS can do anything but just help you to work with the programs you like. OS's role is highly overrated, applications you use are the main thing.

And forget about flashy GUI's, it's fun for an hour or two, but you have to work with your OS much much longer and it has to be *stable*. Think about GUI as those windows sounds you can assign to mouse clicks and similar "actions", in time they become just a nuisance, actually, and you turn them off. You have to work - not play, and both Vista and XP look just like toys when installed with default settings. Hey, reality check! - toys are for children, not for professionals, right?

Cheers!

I still love XP. It's quite simple, seems to run everything great and what I find best of all, NO Bluescreen of Death.

It's still in there, but there's an error handler for it now, so that you get the 'windows has recovered from a serious error' message, your resolution goes to shit, your audio stops working and your colors are reduced to 16, and all the windows extend beyond the boundaries of your monitor...

It's the same thing, practically. You might as well hard reset because a 'shut down' the normal way takes between 3 and 20 minutes sometimes to get to the 'shutting down' screen. ;)

So yeah, again, all they did was pretty up what was already there and called it a feature.

There's no doubt that that advertising stuff is wonky. But it's a patent. You have no idea (or maybe you do) how many patents are applied for, and even secured, just for the sake of having them. A patent-applied-for is not a signifier that the feature will be incorporated any time in the near future. Since advertising is where computing and telecommunications revenue in general is going to come from (free TV, free phones, etc., because they're an avenue for ads), it makes absolutely perfect business sense to dream up and apply for patents relating to advertising.

That's just playing Devil's Advocate. I DO think Microsoft are dodgy enough to actually use it in a bad way. But in general, digging up patents-applied-for is just fear-mongering. There's no point condemning MS for a shady business practice while it's still just a patent. Wait until they actually implement it.

---

Regarding the "serious error" recovery thing, that's just not true. Your resolution, sound settings, etc., do NOT shut down. Windows will generally continue as usual. And the 3 to 20 minutes? Where are you getting this stuff from?

Hseiken, you've shown that you've earned a certain level of respect with regards to your opinion on this issue-- your comments on the whole are balanced and not as 'rabid' as I initially thought, despite some over-the-top anti-MS slobbering. Let's not ruin that with scenarios that aren't true, and numbers pulled out of your rumpus posteriorus.

Besides, at least in Windows, I could set the boundaries of my monitor in the first place without low-level text-editing of configuration files. ;)

That's how it's been with MS OSes all the way back since MS-DOS. I mean, people should be offended by Vista, actually, do they think we [customers] are that stupid not to see that? [many are... unfortuantely]. Same shit - different package, and a feature or two that really *is* worthwhile and every time more bloat then before full of useless and more buggy code. In MS0DOS 10bugs, in W3.11 100bugs, in w95 1000 bugs, in w98me 10000 bugs and so on, ok I'm exaggerating, but not by much...

Cheers!

Just to be sure: thinking Vista is worthwhile makes me stupid?

errr ok you're maybe just too trusty, or not so experienced as others? I don't like offending people even if they deserved it... I mean, do you believe everything you hear in advertisements? You think they're honest? If you say "yes" I'll rest my case your honour... Every add is just a pack of lies to make some more dough, more and more, you have to think for yourself in this consumer society where everything is a lie in one way or the other and MS is one of the biggest and most profound liars anywhere.

Who knows. maybe we're all really leaving in a matrix? Who can deny that? :D

Wrong... it's being forced on consumers via OEM installation on all new computers.

Go into any store and see what is loaded onto every new machine.

There is no escape! :borg:
i opted for xp sp2 on my new dell. it was an option i was given. it's not quite forced yet, i read on /. that people bitched and dell complied.

there is no 'killer app' in vista. unless they let it play xbox360 games, or it does something 10x faster or better than xp, it's going to be VERY hard for m$ to get their digs in my wallet for another os ;)

there is if you had went with dell (at least until the year is out). are the hardware components of your wifes new box compat. with xp?

i could never get my trackpad working on my notebook. it was a gentoo stage3 install. i rolled my own optimizations, did emerges with source and compiled with those optimizations. it was a p3/600 and it took ages to finish. in the end though, it was so freaking fast it was out performing my xp box which was running on a p4/1.9ghz with much more ram and such. partly this was due to the window manager i used (fluxbox) being so lightweight compared to bloated old explorer. though even with bblean or litestep on xp it was still faster in fluxbox on gentoo.

too bad about gentoo. i haven't tried anything else since then linux. i grew up using slackware, and that was fun. this *untu shit is gay, imo. if i ever do run linux again it would be debian or slackware again. i personally hate redhat.

anyway you aren't the only 'mother f**ker' in the world that had all your shit working in linux. first try though, i cannot honestly say that linux was ever flawless first try but i am referring to oldschool distros like slackware5 and the bleeding edge ones like gentoo, so i'm no metric.

simply piping in to support your angst. though i've given up. too many things just require windows to work. i'm a sell out, i admit it.

erase my name from the book of love.
