I value simplicity, but I don't even think you have to turn off ALL the GUI elements of XP. Dunno 'bout Vista. But for XP, just switching to the Silver instead of Blue, and disabling a few of the silly ones is enough. All the stuff that's easily exposed by the OS itself without obscure arcane tweaks. Doesn't take much time or work, and even without disabling most of it, I don't find XP's GUI to be obtrusive. When I go back to a machine using 2K or if I switch to "classic" on XP, I pretty much gag. There's simple, and then there's gross.
Your screenshot above falls into the "gross" category. <chuckle> LED fonts are not high for legibility.
