anyone else feel guilty about using samples?

I know some of you are gonna kill me for saying this, but - even if I've heard some pretty damn good stuff made with loops and samples - I believe that a song made with loops and samples of somebody else playing stands to music as a jigsaw puzzle stands to a painting... Please, try to kill me as humanely as possible

for the record, i use mostly my own samples. if they aren't my own, I warp them until they are....

In painting, you can use your hands and fingers, brushes, or just throw the paint onto the canvas. It is up to you. It is the same in music. If you use premade loops and samples in a creative way and come out with a musical "painting" that you like, does it really matter if used premixed "paint"? Or that you used "hands" instead of "brushes"? The point is the tools do not matter. The only thing that matters is that your spirit and your heart comes through that song. Forget the critics and the "purist" two-faces. Do what feels right.

I agree with Meloday, If I do end up using any melodic samples i warp the heck out of em until they basically sound drastically different from the original sample. (Although I will use percussion loops and samples shamelessly)

What samples do you mean? The royalty free ones or the stole ones used without permission?

Yes, for the latter one you should feel yourself guilty.

It's funny, I feel exactly the opposite. Digging for samples in crates of old vinyl can be an artform. Using royalty free prefab sample cds and drumloops is usually just lazy and uncreative.

but he says 'samples and loops'. I just thought since he named Amon Tobin...and everyone knows his rep as a sample-mangler...he was talking less about simply dropping loops into a sequencer and calling it an arrangement, but more about using samples creatively, and if he should feel guilty about it. that's why i didn't agree with your seemingly blanket 'cult' statement regarding sampling....

as long as the difference between looping and sampling is noted its all good!

i don't use hole loops, but if i did i wouldn't give a crud!!

i'm only in this game as i wanted to make some dubz for me to play as a DJ (& i mean dubz of other tracks with popular Accapellas on them)

i personally think its quite ponce like to attack one for using loops or samples,

but i can be a ponce like dood about other things when i'm ready so i guess its all ballence
