----All those tracks sounded like a Reaktor synth droning on over a beat to me. One of them had a 2nd percussive beat come in around the middle, but I didn't really notice anything much going on other than that, cept the already mentioned delays/reverbs etc.

mateo- Feed me more Basic Channel secrets! :hyper:
I always wonder 2 things about their sound: That sharp crack at the beginning of many of their stabs (sounds like a quick pw env), and the compression on their bass in their later rhythm & sound stuff. It just has such a puff on the top of the amp. Can't find anything else like it :? Too hard to describe too.

Toro Rojo - thanks!

Sorry, I wish I knew more! The crack you're describing probably comes from the synth itself. As for the compression, I'm quite sure they use a fair amount of compression over the whole mix, due to the way the background noise pumps with the bass.

This topic is really interesting to me -- I love Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, and Chain Reaction stuff. I've always had trouble getting the sound myself.

Mateo, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what it is about the Prophet VS that gives it that sound. Is it just the alternative waveforms? If the unprocessed sound is just a quick stab then there's not much time for sweeping the wavetables... I'm just wondering because while I don't have a Prophet VS or a VST simulation, I do have a microQ, which has two wavetable oscillators. I'm wondering if that could be used to get this sound...

Somebody mentioned Akkord form Reaktor. I've heard it and it does seem capable of some very dub techno sounds.

you'll probably need a bit more than a Prophet VS to get their sound. these guys are hard core fans of dub and i would no doubt think that they have used spring reverbs, tape delays, analog phasers, and outboard filters in very experimental ways. and don't forget the analog reel to reel.

Yeah, since the unprocessed sound source is just a stab, no doubt a lot of the character comes from the effects.

I produce exactly that style of music since years now, and its all about chords, delays and reverb. Ive found that the ohmboys delay is very good for this. Recently i use Ferrox a lot for a true tape feeling. For the chords, even the simplest standard vst synth can do that. These are some of my tracks :

This is a dj mix, i produced all the tracks, mixed by a friend dj:

Nice tunes mate

Nice, Timbre! Care to go into your process at all? Do you just set up the delay and verb as separate sends? In series? What about feeding them back to each other?

Anyone taken a "stab" :hihi: at getting that rhythm and sound pumping bass?
