Filter sustain v.s. filter envelope amount

I'm getting really confused with the concepts of filter ADSR and filter envelope amount. It seems that filter sustain should do the same thing as envelope amount does...But then why does pretty much every single VA on the planet has both controllers?

If you have full on sustain that'd be true. But otherwise you have a high point in the attack/decay overlap that'll be more or less high.

The envelope controls how the filter is applied over time, and the amount controls how "deeply" that envelope will remove frequencies - how much of the dry signal is effected. the sustain always occurs within the bounds of the envelope amount setting.

Put it this way.
Amplitude ADSR controls the loudness/volume of a sound.
Filter ADSR controls the cutoff value of the sound, where their sound is dependent on the type of filter applied.
The envelope amount adjusts the 'intensity' or 'total range' to be affected by the ADSR to the Cutoff value where the values are generally relative. (ie: From 64, move it to the right slightly, the filter env would progressively change the cutoff hi-to-lo from subtle to extreme, and vice versa in the reverse direction.
Sustain is meant to adjust the ending point of the envelope, whether it remains on the high end until release, or goes down along with the Decay value.
It should be very straightforward, to be honest.
