I like the style "highlight" function, where you can take the style from one section and "paint" it on another section. Things like that make 2007 much better. And the ribbon is great. Like you said, it's almost the Tracktion of word processors now!

And personally, Open Office has never quite done it for me. And many of the files I've imported and exported didn't display right.

Sure, but that's because you're importing and exporting.

For the creation of new documents, OpenOffice is much more robust than MS Word. I actually find importing to be PRETTY good, all things considered. Exporting, not so much-- because OpenOffice uses different techniques for specialized content.

But to create a new document and export to PDF, OpenOffice is much better.

Do they still not have columns in Open Office? That annoys me. Otherwise, yes, I was doing a lot of importing because I have a TON of stuff in doc format, some created with Word and some with Wordpad. It wouldn't import either of them much of the time.

These days though I do pretty much all my drafting inside Microsoft OneNote, the most underrated office program ever. Extremely useful for every part of what I do on the computer, including the entire planning phase of The Audio Garden, and each detail of it, all organized.

Well, one assumes you still have the license of Office that was used to create those documents. Just as you can use Tracktion OR Ableton Live, both on the same computer, for different projects, you can keep Word installed. OpenOffice accomplished formatting which MS Word simply choked on. Specifically, a thumb-index which automatically updated by section and printed only on right-hand pages. Also, OpenOffice allowed for much easier creation of a sidehead style of presentation than MS Word did, and the "anchoring" of images (to paragraph, character, or page) worked better in OpenOffice. Word is a real hassle for placing images, if you need to switch the image around after placement.

Add to that simple double-click application of styles and cloning/modification of styles, and it does pretty much everything I could ask it to do. Don't get me wrong, Office 2007 is wicked-awesome, and its handling of styles is in most ways even better. But you definitely reveal the power of OpenOffice by using it to generate a full, complex document. Normal wordpro with imported Word files isn't going to win it any fans.

Open Office didn't use to have columns. I specifically went looking for it and it was something that it lacked for a long time. If they are there now, that's great.

I still use OneNote for most things now though, and it interacts with Office in many ways. But I'll check out OO again sometime soon just to see how it's coming along. One thing I liked is when they introduced a TRUE database program. The old method was just too convoluted until they copied the Access methods. Then it actually made sense.

Wow - what's that one called, Alex? None of the other themes have exactly convinced me that all of this themeing work was worth the Dev Time, and there are still some rough edges (like the clips and the MIDI editor in general), but that theme looks like a serious improvement over anything in old REAPER versions.
