Synth woodwind?!

I was watching the special features of Apocalypse Now and one of the synthesists was using a synth-woodwind instrument. I've never seen something like that before but it looks really cool and it sounded like the amount of expression and freedom you get out of it is unrivaled compared to keys. Anyone used one? I'd appreciate any info you got.

There's a yamaha wx7 on ebay... interesting. Also, I don't play woodwinds- is it going to be really tough to learn how to use properly?

I've had a Yamaha WX-5 and vl70-m synth box for a couple of years now.
You can do some great stuff with them.
No substitute for a REAL sax but many of the instruments are more than useful.
(I did a Christmas album full of orchestral horns and everyone thought they were the real thing...)
Go see Matt at www.patchmanmusic.com
He sells new and used windsynths and has great examples on his site.
His custom vl70-m chip is INCREDIBLY realistic and has much better patches than the OEM box.
